A few studies carried out in Africa suggest that people with disabilities are marginalised. In some communities, teaching people with disabilities is forbidden and in others they are considered sub‐human. Such a stereotypic suggestion runs the risk of being generalised to other communities. Since primary school pupils lack a common language, primary school pupils from Germany and Africa show a piece of their origin and of their daily live through simple drawings to their peers in a other, distant land. The teachers accompanying the exchange of these drawings communicated in natural language, but helped to transform what their pupils wanted to show by their drawing. A 6-month course for training general practitioners (GPs) in surgical emergencies was developed and piloted in Ethiopia. The course was designed after an assessment of the surgical manpower needs in Ethiopia. Seven GPs were selected by the Ministry of Health (MOH) from rural hospitals that had no surgical specialists but had operating facilities.
