Corpus-based quantitative studies of text features (cf. Biber 1990, 1988) have become popular due to increasing availability of text corpora and computer software for processing them. Research in this domain can either rely on large corpora (e.g. corpus of Cameroon English, LOB corpus of British English) representing a national variety of English, or use smaller specialized corpora, which are usually compiled for EAP with immediate classroom applications. This latter trend has contributed to...

The aim of this chapter is to explore how personal and collective experiences of an apartheid education system have caused disturbances in the thought and emotions of those who experience such a system. The central objective is to demonstrate how liberation pedagogy, that is, education as a practice of democracy and freedom, can engage its practitioners and beneficiaries. This engagement would of necessity seek to inspire an emancipatory consciousness and orientation and to maximize positive...

A field study of students’ and teachers’ thermal comfort in a school building (St. Andrews Junior High School) was carried out at Madina, Accra. The building was chosen due to the sustainable design principles (e.g. form, orientation and ventilation) employed in the design and construction of the school. The aim of the study was to investigate peoples’ perception of comfort as well as examine the prevailing thermal conditions in the classrooms. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the results...

In 2003, Rwanda introduced free education as part of government policy to improve school enrolment in general and the attendance of deprived children in particular. However, in addition to school fees, other factors hamper school careers of children. This article reports on factors influencing condom use among out-of-school adolescents in rural southwest Uganda. Despite an abundance of negative discourses and myths about condoms in the community, these adolescents believe condoms protect them from sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and premarital pregnancies. Girls want partners to use condoms, but most lack the confidence to insist. Girls aged 13 to 14 reported the least difficulty asking for condoms; older girls attributed this to...

In post-conflict countries like South Africa and Sudan educational changes have taken place over the past decade. As a result, inclusive and...

In this paper, we consider a model of on-the-job learning where workers learn informally by watching and imitating colleagues. We estimate the rate of knowledge diffusion inside the firm using two matched worker-firm data sets from Morocco and Senegal. We rely on non-linear least squares to estimate the structural parameters of the informal learning model and account for firm heterogeneity using firm factors derived from a principal component analysis. We find that the rate of knowledge...

In 2009, the South African Department of Education extended tuition fee abolition to schools serving the poorest 60% of students, increased from 40% in 2007. This policy intends to increase access to and longevity in school for the poorest households by removing fees as a barrier and replacing private revenue with increased state funds. Despite this progressive expansion of fee-free schooling, the reported frequency of non-attendance attributable to school fees increased from 2008 to 2009,...
