Blindness is a major public health problem in developing countries, even though most could be prevented by relatively simple hygienic and medical interventions. Relatively few patients use the quality health care services available, despite their low cost, due to problems of access or socio-cultural barriers. This health services research project stressed the need for measurement of subjective self-perceived health. The objectives of this study were twofold: a) To translate, adapt and...

Practising teachers are the key to the successful implementation of an inclusive system and they will need time, ongoing support and in-service training. Real change therefore requires a long-term commitment to professional development. This article presents a comparative analysis of the findings of three independent studies aimed at identifying and describing...

This article consists of three main sections. In the first, reasons are given why a vision for Christian higher education is, to a large degree, still lacking in Africa. The following factors are dealt with to explain this situation: (1) the politicaleconomic- social environment; (2) the character of Christianity on the continent; (3) the state of higher education; and (4) the implications of all these factors for Christian higher education. The AIDS epidemic is doubling, or tripling the mortality of men, and women in their prime childbearing, and earning years in much of Sub-Saharan Africa, with the tragic result that an estimated one in ten African children under 15, has lost one, or both parents. High adult mortality threatens to reverse hard-won gains in raising school enrollments, and, the loss of a parent could reduce a child's chances of starting, continuing, or completing school, affecting his or her long-term...

In 1994, the newly elected Government in Malawi abolished primary school fees. Using household survey data from 1990/91, and 1997/98, this paper assesses the impact this major policy change, combined with increased Government spending on education, has had on access to schooling by the poor. This paper shows that enrolment rates have increased dramatically over the 1990s, at both the primary and secondary levels, and that crucially, these gains have been greatest for the poor. Marginal...

The following issues were uncovered through the analysis of the students' responses and are listed in order of importance: 1)...

This study examines how the intersect of policy and practice, as articulated by educational leadership, created a school culture that fostered positive educational outcomes for at-risk, poor children in two Philadelphia public elementary schools. The school had reached and sustained an academic achievement standard that defied predicted levels for similar atrisk students. The study hypothesized that a philosophically coherent school community shared by pivotal stakeholders in the child's...
