This paper argues that unless community-based rehabilitation CBR programmes enter into genuine consultation with the disability rights movement they are in danger of repeating the mistakes of institution-based rehabilitation. Partnership between CBR programmes, and disabled people's and parents' organisations in southern Africa has led to the development of a more consumer focused approach to CBR Where disabled adults and parents have been fully involved in the design and implementation of...

The Sahel is a belt of dry savanna lining the southern border of the Sahara. Since 1970, rainfall has decreased by nearly 30% in this region with severe droughts in 1972, 1983, and 1991–92. The impact of dryness on malaria, endemic in the Sahelian belt, has been studied in Senegal (the Niayes) and the Niger Republic (Niger Valley, Zinder, Diffa).

A randomized study on the in vivo efficacies of chloroquine and a pyrimethamine-dapsone combination (Maloprim) in clearing P. falciparum parasitaemia was carried out in 77 asymptomatic semi-immune schoolchildren in the Kilombero District of Tanzania. Children were randomized to receive either chloroquine at a dose of 25 mg/kg over three days, or Maloprim (6.25 mg pyrimethamine + 50 mg dapsone for children under 10 years, and 12.5 mg pyrimethamine + 100 mg dapsone for children 10 or more...

Traces the development of library schools in Nigeria since the Ibadan School began the training of librarians locally in 1960, and observes that the trend is towards training at the undergraduate level for a Bachelor’s degree. Examines the local conditions which have made the Bachelor’s degree programmes become most common and consequently generally accepted in Nigeria as the first professional qualification. Disagrees with the suggestion that librarians should only be trained at the...

This article firstly gives a short chronological overview of the small farmer development concept in South Africa and shows how this was generally associated with the traditional black rural areas and subsistence agriculture. This restricted the wider application of this concept. Valuable lessons however can and must be learnt from this experience because small farmer programmes is currently viewed as an important aspect of agricultural development in South Africa. The discussion then...

White English-speaking South Africans have historically exhibited a weak attachment to South Africa and to their own ethnic group. An explanation for this may be that such social categories have previously brought about a negative social identity, and have thus necessitated a decrease in social category salience. The present study, constituting a repetition and extension of a study by Morse, Mann and Nel (1977), explored the possibility that this situation might be changing as a result of...

Looks at the nature of undergraduate education in South Africa. Claims that the differing views held by government with limited resources for education, academics with a desire to maintain discipline integrity, industry which requires graduates able to increase economic competitiveness and students who wish to improve their own position in the new South Africa will require a sensitive resolution. A similar debate in the United Kingdom has led to many recent developments in undergraduate...

International development policy makers are recognizing climate change and desertification as fundamental obstacles to the social and economic development of the Third World. Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the Sahel region, has been severely impacted by the compounding effects of drought, deforestation and desertification. The Senegal River Basin in the West Africa is a prime example of a region where development objectives are seriously undermined by the drought-induced desertification...

The system of music education described above is based on a theory. Music theory - instrumental technique - performance of music -≫ reward for achievement = certificate: that is the theoretical design of the system. But there is a deeper theory behind it - a philosophical system, a way of thinking. We who have been educated in Western educational systems have grown so much into it that it seems our way of thinking is completely natural. It is the system of essentialism, of always trying to...

Average atmospheric concentrations of lead were found to be 1.8, 0.86, 0.56 and 0.44 microgram m-3 in industrial, commercial, park/beach and residential areas of Durban. Exposure to these elevated levels would represent a health hazard to many children in the city. Lower lead concentrations were found in a local township (0.26 microgram m-3) and rural (0.03 microgram m-3) areas of Natal Province. The study provided background data that can be used to follow the trajectory of change in...

The case study of an all-male Catholic college preparatory school illustrates that, although the school appears to be a model school, African American students do not feel connected to the school community or culture, and many experience alienation, frustration, and racial prejudice at the school. Initial interview questions were pretested with 10 students, and then surveys of 66 members of the larger student population and 10 faculty members were conducted. The school enrolled 1,355...

African American children are victimized by poverty, discrimination, and even adoption policies which keep them in foster care and in institutions. Transracial adoption, one avenue to alleviate the problem, is burdened with controversy that need to be resolved. This article explores the opinions of African American college students on transracial adoption. It was found that transracial adoption was preferred to foster care or institutionalization, and that children need a permanent home regardless of the adoptive parent's race.
