The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) library combines administrative decentralization with a dirigist thrust from the university librarian. The rapid turnover of senior staff and inexperienced junior staff imposes strains and creates a need for a looser organizational structure. Training must encourage entrepreneurial, innovative individuals. Describes the national staff development scheme at junior and senior level and examines future training needs.

Two hundred and fifty-one Nigerian medical and nursing students from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital completed a questionnaire on chloroquine-induced pruritus. One hundred and thirty (51–8%) students experienced itching, and in 71 the symptoms were so distressing that chloro- quine was no longer used for treating febrile malarial episodes. The 1980 El Asnam earthquake should be understood within its tectonic environment. A seismotectonic map of the lower Cheliff basin (scale: 1/500,000) has been synthesized from known geologic, tectonic and seismological work on the region, and from satellite photos. Debris avalanches are rapid flowages of incoherent, unsorted mixtures of rock and soil material which move in response to gravity. On the southern and eastern slopes of Mt Hagen, a minimum area of 105 km2 has been covered by chaotic deposits of matrix‐supported clasts which form conical hills.
