The 1979 intake to the matriculation studies programme, run by the Department of Extension Studies of the University of Papua New Guinea, has been used as a population for a study on attrition and performance. The study has examined the relationship between two success criteria and several factors with a possible bearing on attrition rates. The factors which turned out to be most important were age, number of children, housing conditions, sex, sponsorship and region of residence.

Secondary education in Swaziland has rapidly expanded in the decade or so since independence. Alongside this achievement has been a growing apprehension that the modern sector's capacity to generate employment is not commensurate with the rising number of educated young people leaving secondary school. The emergence of a ‘school leaver problem’ as disenchanted educated youngsters remained unemployed was therefore seen as a real possibility towards the end of the 1970s. Such considerations...

In common with other states, Papua New Guinea is addressing the problem of preparing educated young people to re-enter rural life and take up forms of self-employment. The Secondary Schools Community Extension Project is the newest of a line of experiments. 320 children, 160 from a rural and 160 from an urban primary school were examined for dental caries. The urban children were found to have twice as much caries as their rural counterparts. Their D.M.F./df indices were also much higher. No significant sex difference was noted. The tribal distribution shows that the Tonga are the most susceptible tribe while the Lenje have the least caries. The relationship between caries and brushing habits, as well as consumption of confectionary was...

Serological studies in a group of children showed that there was a high degree of immunity to measles at birth (100%), but this decreased rapidly so that by the age of 5 months there was 36% immunity and by 7-8 months the level had dropped to 5%. However, there was a gradual rise from the age of 9 months onwards, so that by the age 6-9 years there was 75% immunity and from 10 years onwards there was 100% immunity. The findings suggest that measles vaccination can be given from the age of 6...

African urban populations are growing at a fast rate. The resulting health problems pose a challenge to health education. A community development, self-help approach is recommended. Experiences of health educators-in-training in Ibadan, Nigeria, show this approach to be relevant if practitioners are able to creatively deal with certain community variables-community identity, internal integration, group orientation, external linkage and resource characteristics. At times students express...

Two schools in rural Tanzania were surveyed regarding the pupils' nutrition (weight and height), serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgE), autoantibodies, malaria antibodies, hepatitis B antigenemia, and fecal and urinary parasites. The survey attempted to quantify the relative importance of undernutrition and parasitic infestation in determining the serological abnormalities found. Of all the children surveyed 69% were undernourished (less than 80% of expected weight for age); 63% had...

The effects of stranded oil from a tanker collision off the South African coast on the meiofauna ratio and density have been monitored over a period of 1 year on two sandy beaches. The perturbation of two beaches was judged against reference beach meiofauna density behaviour. In the undisturbed beach, oil deposited in sediment depressed harpacticoid copepod numbers, while numbers of nematodes stayed similar to those of the reference levels. Removal of surface sand in the mechanically...
