This article reports on a small case study of the impact of instructional materials on students, and the impact of high-stakes testing in Kenya on those who fail; who, because there is very limited employment, are potentially open to radicalisation. The setting is secondary schools in Kenya which, after the 1998 attacks by al-Quaeda and later inter- and intra-community conflicts during the 2008 election, has seen a resurgence in externally sponsored terrorism, this time from Al-Shabaab, with...

[Extract] In the following analysis of aspects of education in Gaza, I aim to put ancient and modern worlds into mutually illuminating dialogue, contributing to understanding significant aspects of Gazan education and raising potentially productive questions for the ‘learning city’ paradigm. The ‘learning city’ approach may provide a useful heuristic framework for evaluating aspects of the success of education in Gaza, while the Gazan experience may simultaneously help scholars identify,...

In this article, I address African indigenous knowledge of early childhood development by discussing young children’s cultural spaces of care, play and learning among the Guji people of Ethiopia. I analyze practices in the cultural spaces of young children and show how participatory community-based care and learning are pivotal in the tradition of early childhood development in the Guji people. Furthermore, I present the features of play and learning traditions in which young children are...

We report palaeomagnetic and K–Ar geochronologic results of two volcanic sequences from Ethiopia. The Belessa section, dated around 29–30 Ma and spanning ∼1 km in thickness, is related to the Oligocene Afro-Arabian traps, whereas the ∼700-m-thick Debre Sina section was emplaced during the Miocene in two periods around 10–11 and 14–15 Ma. We sampled 67 flows of predominantly basaltic rocks near Belessa and 59 rhyolitic to trachybasaltic flows near Debre Sina. From a geodynamic viewpoint, the...

Uncertainties about the amount of resources needed to combat climate change, dwindling local resources, limited local autonomy and limited expertise constrain local governments (LGs) in their response to the effects of climate change. As a result, financing climate change remains a major nightmare for LG actors across diverse nested territorial containers. It certainly requires the embracing of a multifaceted approach – the use of system thinking where local governments’ resource husbandry...

Changing rural–urban connections are made evident in the patterns and dynamics of rural transformations. This study investigates these transformations by presenting data from a particularly dynamic area: Njombe Region in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. By taking its empirical point of departure in the development of Njombe Town and its rural hinterland, this paper illustrates how such transformations are manifested in this region and how they influence the livelihoods of rural dwellers,...

Terrestrial oil pollution is one of the major causes of ecological damage within the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and has caused a considerable loss of mangroves and arable croplands since the discovery of crude oil in 1956. The exact extent of landcover loss due to oil pollution remains uncertain due to the variability in factors such as volume and size of the oil spills, the age of oil, and its effects on the different vegetation types. Here, the feasibility of identifying oil-impacted...

As we all know, the environment is central to our continued existence on earth and changes in the environment (both natural and man-made) affect it either to the benefit or detriment of man. One of such changes in the physical environment which has grave consequences for the existence of mankind is climate change. Interestingly, climate change is no longer a speculative issue. A strong, global scientific consensus exists to show that this phenomenon is real and if current trends of global...

The North African Coastal Low-Level Jet (NACLLJ) is a semi-permanent feature offshore the north western African coast, linked to the cold nearshore upwelling of the Canary Eastern Boundary Current system. Its main synoptic drivers are the Azores Anticyclone over the ocean and the inland Sahara thermal low. The coastal jet events occur in one of the world’s most productive fisheries region, thus the evaluation of the effects of global warming in its properties is imperative. This study...
