This paper explores geographies of identity of Ghanaian school dropouts. In particular, we investigate how school dropouts in rural communities construct narratives of identity within and outside school. In our analysis we trace how space, power and identity intersect in accounts of dropping out. Focusing on the narratives of four school ‘dropouts’, we start with their accounts of life outside school where they have significant social responsibilities as parents, carers and/or wage-earners....

In the past, non-formal education in South Africa was committed to supporting the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM) in opposition to apartheid. Such non-formal political education was concerned with education for democracy. Post 1994, South African adult education policy has exclusively concentrated on vocational training, shifting the focus away from social purpose education. However, democracy is a process and a system that needs to be constantly nurtured and sustained. This requires citizens...

Allocation of resources to schools in a centrally managed state system, as the Tunisian one, should depend on the performance of the individual institutions. The optimal size is of crucial importance in this context and we need accurate measurement for sound policies. This article discusses and implements a nonparametric statistical test procedure for organization scale efficiency. This procedure allows us to test whether the observed scale efficiency is optimal or not, using a smooth...

Most studies on climate change in Africa are driven by the atmospheric sciences community and are disconnected from development-related issues. Thus, they remain inadequate to address the interconnected challenges facing the continent (Scholes et al., 2008). If climate change and its effects are left unchecked, the plight of millions of poor households in Africa will only worsen in future. Moreover, should climate change go unabated, it could undermine or even reverse attempts toward...

A new ‘inclusive’ curriculum has been introduced in Papua New Guinea, with significant levels of support from a bilateral development agency. The curriculum is inclusive in the sense that it is designed to meet the diverse, complex, and ever-changing needs of students. Research indicates the curriculum has been shaped by various influences, most particularly Western educational ideology. Research in remote rural schools revealed that stakeholders were unable and unwilling to adopt many of...

Climate change and variability pose a serious threat to food production in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The projected changes in spatio-temporal patterns of rainfall and temperature are likely to affect water and nutrients availability, crop growth, and yield. This paper presents the simulated effects of climate change on maize (Zea mays L.) yield under rainfed conditions in Ejura, Ghana, known as one of the major food baskets of the country. Experimental data from maize grown under various...

The roles of textbooks in postcolonial states is increasingly complicated, even more so when engaging a gendered analysis. This is in large part due the pressure national education ministries face considering the demands of the international aid community, particularly since implementation of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, nation-building, and cultural diversity. Using Kenya as a site of analysis, this article uses interviews conducted with Kenyan primary school students...

This study aims to assess the risks and opportunities posed by climate change to potato growers in South Africa and to evaluate adaptation measures in the form of changes in planting time growers could adopt to optimise land and water use efficiencies in potato, using a climate model of past, present-day and future climate over southern Africa and the LINTUL crop growth model. This was done for distinct agro-ecosystems in South Africa: the southern Mediterranean area where potato still is...
