South Africa is currently undergoing a process of reconstruction and transformation, and educational changes constitute an integral part of this process. Organization Development (OD), could play a valuable role in such change. OD practices, when located within an ecosystemic framework, represent a departure from certain inadequacies of conventional educational psychology practice in South Africa, such as decontextualization and individualization. This paper is the product of a formative...

Abstract School guidance and counselling services ought to be designed and implemented to meet the needs of the pupils. The high school guidance programme should operate in a preventive way and attempt to equip pupils with information, skills and attitudes so that they can successfully negotiate the challenges of adolescence. If school group guidance lessons are to meet the pupils' needs and are to be experienced by the pupils as being relevant to their lives, then they must address the...

Abstract This paper attempts to show that while the family continues to be an important value within the social fabric, and may continue to be idealized as the primary socializing agent, it does not have a sustained impact on matters that concern population and family life education. Its traditional functions are increasingly being taken over by schools (and other social welfare organizations) which are equipped with the necessary human and other resources to anticipate and effectively...

Geographical Information Systems or GIS has become one of the more prominent research and training tools in South African university departments in the 1990s. GIS developed in the 1970s in North America in response to the expanding capacity of computer systems and the need to integrate spatial and attribute data (Maguire et al, 1991). It was only in the mid‐1980s that the first systems were set up in South Africa, primarily at research institutions such as the Department of Water Affairs and...

Most studies suggest that family background has a strong effect on earnings both directly and indirectly through the returns to own education. However, such effects might reflect the influence of family background on entry into work rather than a productive effect on earnings. The paper uses data from a survey of 16–29 year olds in urban Ethiopia to examine the impact of family background on selection into work and earnings. Family background strongly influences entry into the public sector;...

Distribution of cases by age is bimodal with incidence highest among sexually active young adults (20-39 years) and the very young (0-4 years), and the male-to-female ratio is nearly 1:1 among adults....
