Abstract Natrocarbonatite magma, erupted as lava flows in the Tanzanian volcano Oldoinyo Lengai in June and November of 1988, has evolved chemically since its formation. The June and November flows of 1988 display increasing Cl, F, Ba, K, Mg and Mn, concomitantly with Na, Ca and P depletion. Furthermore, the June magma, at the time of eruption, had higher Cl, F, Ba and K contents and lower Ca than the November magma and evolved to higher levels of Cl, F, Ba and K content and lower Ca, Na and...

This paper examines the implications of language in education policy in post apartheid South Africa, for both schools and universities. Particular attention is paid to the recommendations of the Language Task Action Group (LANGTAG), delegated by the Minister of Education in 1995, to establish South Africa's language-related needs and policies across different domains in the society. The African population in South Africa is undergoing relatively rapid transition in lifestyle, with increasing proneness to western diseases. At the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA), the majority of the African students come from homes where mainly cereal‐based diets are eaten. They are now exposed to ‘western’ foods. To throw light on the subsequent changes, between 1989 and 1993, 383 third year students underwent a practical course on nutritional assessment, which included...

Evidence relating to a possible volcanic eruption in western Lesotho during 1983 is documented and evaluated. It is concluded that a small quantity of highly vesicular, basaltic lava was extruded from a narrow orifice associated with a fracture in basalt of the Drakensberg Group. The eruption was accompanied by a seismic event measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale. The new lava has a chemical composition very similar to that of the 183-Ma-old host rock, but is isotropic and glassy, with no...

Abstract South Africa is going through one of the most thorough-going education and training reforms ever seen in Africa. This reform programme seeks to address the legacies of the past and build towards a policy for the new millennium based in concerns of both equity and development. However, this exercise has tended to place too little emphasis upon the realities within the institutions that will be expected to deliver on the change and lacks a coherent view of the possibilities for policy...

To investigate the beliefs and attitudes of black South African students regarding condoms structured questionnaires were completed anonymously by 1986 students. Most highly endorsed problems were the large number needed for many rounds of sex, partner's feelings of distrust, unpleasantness of purchasing condoms, and that condoms injure the vagina. Encouragement of use should be responsive to local practices.

A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate the effects of Van Houten and Thompson's (1976) explicit timing procedure on problem completion rates and accuracy levels in African‐American third‐grade students. During the explicit timing phase, students were told that they were being timed and were instructed to circle the last problem completed at each 1‐min interval. Results showed that the explicit timing procedure increased problem completion rates. A decreasing trend in percentage of...
