An African Grey parrot, previously taught to use vocal English labels to discriminate more than 80 different objects and to respond to questions concerning categorical concepts of color and shape, was trained and tested on relational concepts ofsame anddifferent. The subject, Alex, replied with the correct English categorical label (“color,” “shape,” or “mah-mah” [matter]) when asked “What’s same?” or “What’s different?” about pairs of objects that varied with respect to any combination of...

Abstract The North Yemen earthquake (Mb = 6.0) of 13 December 1982 is the first earthquake in the southern Arabian Peninsula known to be accompanied by surface displacements. The extensive destruction and loss of lives resulted entirely from widespread collapse of unreinforced masonry and mud brick structures; maximum Modified Mercalli intensity was probably VII to VIII. The only surface manifestation of tectonic activity was the occurrence of earthquake-related extensional ground cracks in...

Abstract Water samples were collected in the different seasons during the period 1979–1981 from the Nozha Hydrodrome, Egypt, a small shallow lake receiving polluted Nile water, to gain information on the environmental conditions, nutrient contents, levels of trace metals and their possible variations in relation to pollution effects. The accumulation of trace metals in the lake sediments and in different tissues of the common fish, Tilapia species, was also investigated. During the study...

Information on evaluation planning for the Community Junior Secondary School (CJSS) system in Botswana is presented in this monograph. The papers were used within the Ministry of Education's Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation as part of the Junior Secondary Education Improvement Project (JSEIP). The first two chapters describe the participative and argumentative orientation of the evaluation plans. Chapter 3 outlines the mechanism recommended to conduct the evaluation...

In 1983 and 1984, drought spread across the northern rangelands of Kenya and herders in lowland Samburu lost substantial portions of their livestock. Food aid arrived when 50 to 75% of the cattle had already died, and after poorer pastoralists were hungry enough to sell their remaining productive animals. No pastoralists died of the immediate effects of the drought, but many were so impoverished that their longer‐term prospects for remaining as herders look dim. This essay discusses the...

Abstract Sporadic small garnet granulite and two-pyroxene granulite xenoliths found in the carbonatite tuffs and lavas near Fort Portal, South West Uganda, are chiefly silica-saturated and rich in Al 2 O 3 (> 20 wt. %) and Na 2 O ( c. 2 to 4 wt. %). Three REE patterns are distinguished: LREE enriched— HREE depleted with a positive Eu anomaly; LREE depleted— HREE relatively enriched and flat; and LREE slightly enriched with a very weak Eu anomaly and high overall REE . The xenoliths are...

Many volcanic and tectonic episodes occurred in northern Turkana between 33 and 7 Ma. Geochemistry and mineralogy reveal contrasting magma variations for the volcanics which erupted during Oligocene-Miocene time. The oldest volcanism (Turkana basalts), linked to the development of the Ethiopian “dome”, began with the emission of subalkaline basalts of “transitional” character, and ended with alkali basalts, hawaiites and mugearites. The subsequent cycle, linked to the Kenyan “dome”, includes...

1. Twenty apparently healthy and normal Nigerian male students, resident at the University of Ibadan campus, were studied for seven consecutive days to assess their food energy intake and expenditure and pattern of their daily activities. 2. The mean age (years) of the group was 24.0 (SD 3.23, range 20-30), mean height (m) 1.71 (SD 0.06, range 1.61-1.84) and body-weight (kg) was 61.1 (SD 5.01, range 51.0-69.5). 3. The food intake of each subject was obtained by direct weighing and its energy...
