Within the ankaramitic and carbonatitic pyroclastics of Lashaine there is a suite of unaltered, ultrabasic fragments of wide compositional range, including garnet-lherzolite, which typically occurs as xenoliths in kimberlite pipes.87Sr/86Sr ratios and Rb and Sr contents of five ultrabasic blocks and two host-rocks are presented. The host-rocks have different87Sr/86Sr ratios. Compared with their hosts, the ultrabasic rocks have high Rb/Sr ratios. The87Sr/86Sr ratios of two lherzolite...

abstract The activity associated with the Congo earthquake of March 20 1966 (mb = 6.5 to 7) was studied with emphasis on the time and magnitude distributions. The data were recorded at the Abéché, Chad, seismograph station operated by Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. Over a period of about 70 days, 815 earthquakes with magnitude (mb) greater than or equal to 3.3 were recorded, and they form the basis for this study. The aftershocks are distributed with magnitude (mb) according to the...

Albino guinea pigs were trained in shuttle-boxes. Superior performances were achieved with longer CS–US (15 sec. against 5 sec.) and intertrial intervals (90 sec. against 30 sec.). There were no performance increments within sessions, but improvements in performance occurred between sessions. Consolidation mechanisms probably play an important part in avoidance learning by guinea pigs.

Abstract The present experiment is intended to confirm my earlier findings, and to sustain the assumption that East African students' structure of mental difficulties is no different from that of students in the West. Seven factors were chosen for this study, each being represented by two Western reference tests. These Factors are: NFT; CFB; CFU; MSI; ESU; CMU and DSU. The battery was administered to two samples of students:-l04 Higher School Certificate boys (HSC) in secondary 5 land 6, and...

The delayed-type hypersensitivity response of germ-free guinea-pigs was found to be defective. Whereas almost all conventionally reared guinea-pigs became hypersensitive to an allergenic hapten (picryl chloride), most germ-free guinea-pigs did not. When injected with a fully antigenic substance, bovine γ-globulin (BGG), none of the germ-free animals acquired BGG-specific delayed hypersensitivity. Further, none of the germ-free guinea-pigs developed spontaneous iso-hypersensitivity for a beta...

Summary Small trachyte and phonolite bodies are shown as eroded plugs on published geological maps of part of north-eastern Nigeria. Field relationships at two such ‘plugs’ strongly suggest them to be extrusive in origin, formed of an earlier tholoid-building phase, followed by extrusion of a spine (plug dome) of very viscous lava, now forming the central peak at each locality. Petrographic data show that the tholoid and spine-forming lavas are phonolites of contrasted composition. Eruption...
