This paper attempts to set forth a preliminary account of some of the effects of large-scale weather changes on the occurrence of air pollution. Synoptic weather situations obtaining over South Africa are compared with observed pollution levels over Johannesburg and it is shown that the correlation between the two is good. No such effect appears to exist for hilly coastal hinterlands.
