Science has been part of the compulsory primary school curriculum in most of anglophone Africa since states achieved independence, but in practice many obstacles prevent children in rural areas from acquiring an adequate grounding in science. This paper addresses four main aspects of access to science learning, namely (1) obstacles to access; (2) the potential within existing curriculum and organizational structures; (3) the notion of a minimum entitlement in science learning in primary...

To determine the contribution of breakfast-eating behavior to dietary adequacy among low-income African-American children, 1151 children attending grades two through five at four elementary schools in East Orange, New Jersey were studied. Results of a 4-day eating behavior survey and a 24-hour dietary recall reveal that on any given day, 12% to 26% of children attend school without having eaten anything. Thirty-six percent of the children were obese, which did not vary with breakfast-eating...

This article reviews the relevancy of four key Western adult learning principles and their suitability for the African context. For the purpose of this study, the following key precepts are examined: (a) adults learn best when they actively participate in the learning process (the basis for experiential activities in adult learning settings); (b) adults are independent learners, (indeed, andragogues believe that adults are independent learners and should be made responsible for their...

A persistent and pervasive problem in the education of African American students is their disproportionate representation in special education classes (Heller, Holtzman, & Messick, 1982; Mercer, 1973; Serwatka, Deering, & Stoddard, 1989). This problem is most pronounced in the rate of underrepresentation of African American students in gifted programs. Conversely, there exists a disproportionately high representation of African American students in classes for educable mentally retarded...

Silali, 1°109N, 36°12°E, is the largest Quaternary caldera volcano in the northern Gregory Rift and is composed predominantly of peralkaline trachytic lavas and pyroclastic deposits, and mildly alkaline to transitional basalts. Detailed mapping combined with radiometric 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age determinations is used to constrain the evolutionary development of Silali. Activity commenced at c. 400–220 ka with the construction of a low relief lava shield whose summit area was subsequently modified by...

Health workers (HWs) play a pivotal role in preventative programmes being implemented to combat the steady increase in the prevalence of HIV infection and AIDS in Nigeria. We report on a questionnaire survey conducted in October, 1993 among 111 doctors, 92 nurses and 53 non-health workers at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria. The aim was to assess their knowledge of AIDS (for all groups) and the attitude of the HWs only towards the care of patients with AIDS (PWAs)....

Abstract Past climatic moisture anomalies can be reconstructed from climatically sensitive tree‐ring chronologies of Cedrus atlantica in Morocco. A map‐pattern technique was utilized to derive 10 patterns of variability for the period 1845–1974. The individual patterns were examined, in space using geostatistical techniques, and in time using correlation coefficients. The results indicate a clear alternation of favourable‐unfavourable climatic regimes lasting 20–25 years. The spatial extent...

Recently Taylor and Boeyens (1991) showed that the South African Personality Questionnaire has inadequate internal consistency and factorial validity for use in the black population. This paper reports a study supporting their conclusion that scales developed with data from a white sample do not hold together psychometrically or conceptually when used with a black sample. In a sample of white students, Altemeyer's Right Wing Authoritarianism scale, initially developed in Canada, had an...

The present study investigated differences between Egyptian boys and girls in simultaneous and sequential cognitive processes. Four tests of the Kaufman Assessment Battery and one test from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Revised were administered to 172 children (82 boys and 90 girls) in Grades 1, 3, and 5. Analysis indicated that the underlying factor structure of the children's performance was similar for boys and girls. Boys tended to surpass girls on simultaneous and...
