Recent studies have shown that the efficacy of benzimidazole drugs is influenced by the intensity of trichuriasis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of albendazole (ALB) and mebendazole (MBZ) administered randomly for 1 (ALB×1 and MBZ×1) or 2 days (ALB×2 and MBZ×2) to 385 school children with heavy-intensity trichuriasis (mean faecal egg counts (FEC) >1000 eggs per gram of stool (epg)) in Jimma Town, Ethiopia. The efficacies (95% confidence intervals) by...

Increasingly erratic rainfall and unreliable cropping seasons in southern Africa, combined with high food prices, heighten vulnerability of rural people to food insecurity. To understand what actions are needed to expand adaptive capacity to climate change and its consequences for food security, it is useful to learn from existing agricultural practices in semi-arid areas that exploit positive opportunities of rainfall variability. To determine how residents attain food self-sufficiency...

The damage caused by earthquake occurrences in different localities necessitates the evaluation of the subsurface structure. A priori estimation of the site effects became a major challenge for an efficient mitigation of the seismic risk. In the case of moderate to large earthquakes, at some distances from large events, severe damage often occurred at zones of unfavorable geotechnical conditions that give rise to significant site effects. The damage distribution in the near-source area is...

A local geodetic network consisting of eleven benchmarks has been established to study the recent crustal deformation in the Abu-Dabbab area. Seven campaigns of GPS measurements have been collected started from October 2008 and ended in March 2012. The collected data were processed using Bernese version 5.0, and the result values were adjusted to get the more accurate positions of the GPS stations. The magnitudes of horizontal displacements are variable from one epoch to another and in the...

The impact of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Gulf Guinea to the West Africa and Sahel drought of 2005 has been examined using Satellite data. Daily TRMM 3B42 precipitation estimates and TMI SST data sets show concurrent variability during the summer of 2005, indicating the influence of Gulf of Guinea SST over rainfall in these regions. The SSTs that contribute to the drought are no-seasonal fluctuations that occurred during this period and are caused by stronger than normal...

Background and Aims
Sierra Leone has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world, with 113 out of every 1000 live births dying in their first year of life. Many of these deaths occur in the first month of life from birth asphyxia, complications of low birth weight and prematurity and neonatal sepsis. Sierra Leone has a critical shortage of health workers, especially those with skills in neonatal care. We aimed to develop and evaluate the impact of a two-day training...
