This article is a conceptual consideration of what could be regarded as pedagogical justice for disadvantaged students in South African schools. Combining Bourdieu's social reproduction account of education with elements of Bernstein's consideration of the internal dynamics that constitute the pedagogic relay, the article considers the pedagogical terms upon which these students can meaningfully be engaged in their school going. Such engagement, I argue, has to contend with the cultural...

This study examines day-to-day variability in psychometrically defined mild cognitive impairment (MCI) status and potential predictors of changes in MCI status in an independent-living sample of urban dwelling older adults in Baltimore, Maryland. The participant sample consisted of 50 older adults, ranging in age from 50 to 80 years. Participants completed health and cognitive measures (i.e., executive function, language, memory, and global cognition) over 8 occasions within a 2-3-week...

Abstract: This article examines the early history of disability rights activism in Kenya. The transitional years from colonialism to independence were a period of great expectations. For persons with disabilities in particular, decolonization held additional possibilities and potential. National independence promised not just majority rule but also an all-inclusive citizenship and the commitment to social justice. Among the visually impaired of Kenya, such collective aspirations led to the...

The late Neoproterozoic of Wadi Ranga area, south Eastern Desert was characterized by extensive magmatism consisting predominantly of calc-alkaline older granitoids, Ranga volcanics and granite porphyry intrusions forming a belt of volcanic-intrusive complexes. Geological studies of the Ranga volcanics revealed two sequences of volcanic suites: the older mafic sequence composed essentially of basalt/basaltic andesite lava flows and the associated pyroclastics, while the younger felsic one...

CURRENT CONDITIONS Located in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea has a long coastline on the Red Sea. The country has varied topography, rainfall, and climate, with altitude ranging from 60 to more than 3,000 meters above sea level. The climate ranges from hot and arid near the Red Sea to subhumid in isolated micro catchments along the eastern escarpment. The central highlands have a semi-arid climate. Most of the year’s rain falls within a short time, resulting in soil erosion and runoff.

Participants were 94 African American and 189 Caucasian college freshmen who completed an online survey assessing perceived racism, alcohol consequences, alcohol consumption, negative affect, and deviant behavior. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that...

Variations in topography and micro-climate shape the country’s ecological zones—the lowlands, the foothills, the highlands, and the Senqu River Valley. Annual precipitation is highly variable, both temporally and spatially, ranging from 500 mm to 760 mm. Temperatures, too, are highly variable, ranging from –10°C to 30°C.

Abstract Access to school continues to be problematic to most learners with disability, irrespective of the nations’ commitment to scale up efforts to support them at various levels of education. For learners with visual impairment in Botswana, poor school performance continues to impede their chances to learn beyond grade 12 (Form 5). The only option available to them after completion of Grade 12 is to join the Rehabilitation and Development Trust centre for the Blind, a Dutch Reformed...

Life expectancy improved between 1960 and the late 1990s, while mortality rates among children under the age of five have been declining. The number of malnourished children under five years is high (estimated at 27.2 percent in 2003). The population living on less than US$2 a day is very high (91 percent). This group is the most vulnerable to climate change because more than half depend on subsistence agriculture. The country’s population has become increasingly urban over time, and...

The specialty of emergency medicine (EM) remains largely underdeveloped in many parts of the world including Africa. Within West Africa the Liberian health care system was presented with incredible challenges in the immediate post conflict years. One significant challenge facing the country was the paucity of health care providers. In 2006, only 122 physicians were practising in Liberia (one for every 26,782 citizens), only 87 of them Liberian national physicians. The public health...

Abstract This article reports the findings of a review of classroom-based studies in order to discern what the existing knowledge base around teaching and learning is in South African primary schools. Educational research on classrooms has been criticised on a number of grounds, including the fact that it is generally small-scale, qualitative and that it lacks methodological rigour. Although these criticisms would appear to be valid, and there certainly are methodological limitations to the...
