South Africa has the highest number of HIV infected individuals worldwide. Local Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) is one component of the national strategic plan to tackle this. The Mbashe district lies in the heart of the Eastern Cape, a low resource rural community with poor infrastructure and access to health care facilities. In addition to these physical obstacles, HIV stigma is a significant barrier to attendance at clinic-based VCT. Outreach is therefore a vital component of VCT and HIV education programmes.
