This intensive social biography of a rural Moroccan judge discusses Islamic education, the concept of knowledge it embodies, and its communication from the early years of colonial rule in twentieth-century Morocco to the present. The work sensitively combines the outlooks and perceptions of the author and those of the shrewd and reflective 'Abd ar-Rahman, supplementing our knowledge of resurgent militant Islamic movements by describing other popularly supported Islamic attitudes toward the contemporary world.

This paper evaluates an in-service development education project for British teachers that visited The Gambia and Senegal in 1984. It discusses the theoretical perpectives involved in such a project as well as issues of organisation such as recruitment, subject orientation and modes of leadership. It concludes by considering the extent to which the project achieved its initial aims.

Abstract The author contributed to a short ‘in service’ course for staff engaged on a World Bank upgrading project for Ethiopian housing. The project includes both the building of new houses by self‐build co‐operatives on the periphery of Addis Ababa, and the upgrading of a dense inner city area in conditions of acute deprivation. The paper is a highly personal account of the author's impressions of the value of such initiatives.

AF64A was examined for its ability to impair cholinergic neurotransmission in the autonomic nervous system. In the guinea-pig ileum AF64A impaired cholinergic neuromuscular transmission.
