A questionnaire survey of 713 pupils of Secondary Schools in Bo town, Southern Sierra Leone, on tobacco and cannabis smoking was carried out in January and February 1994. There were 56.8% males and 43.2% females with a mean age of 17.6 +/- 1.5 years. Lifetime use of both substances was 9% while current use was 4.2%. An analysis is presented on associations of smoking, education and occupation with blood pressure among residents of a high density town near Harare, Zimbabwe. A total of 973 persons aged five years and above were surveyed in 1993. Obesity was significantly (p < 0.001) correlated with blood pressure (systolic or diastolic). Six commercial cultivars (Anna, Aurore, Danhill, Danlight, Melanie, and Thelca), one drought-tolerant cultivar (Orangeade), nine breeding selections, and one check genotype of Impatiens hawkeri Bull were evaluated for differences in drought tolerance based on water loss and time to wilt. Groups of adult guinea pigs were treated intramuscularly with isepamicin at doses of 100, 150 and 225 mg/kg/day for 21 days. For comparison, two other groups were administered either saline or amikacin 225 mg/kg/day.
