B ackground and Aim: Being the most common pathologic cause of hydronephrosis in children, we characterized and evaluated the long-term outcome of Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) at a tertiary hospital in South Africa Methods: Children confirmed to have UPJO between 1985 and 2016 were characterized based on demographic and baseline clinical data. Long term outcomes were need for surgical intervention, loss to follow up rates, anthropometric measures, renal outcomes (Glomerular...

Over the past three decades, seeds banks have emerged as a major strategy for building seed systems resilience to climate change. Often initiated and funded by non-governmental organizations, seeds banks have grown prolifically, but questions remain concerning their long-term sustainability. Despite their precipitous rise, and effectives during initial years, many seed banks cut back on activities or stop altogether once external NGO funding is withdrawn. This rise and fall of seed banks...

PURPOSE Educating women on how to examine their breasts can raise breast cancer awareness and early detection rates, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In this study, the influence of a teaching session on breast self-examination (BSE) during pregnancy was evaluated. METHODS A quasi-experimental study design was used. A total of 1,248 pregnant women whose pregnancies had a gestational age of 26 weeks or less were recruited from three antenatal clinics representing three tiers of...

This paper presents the use of Internet of things (IoT) to solve the challenges encountered in groundwater management. We present a model for predicting the sustainability of groundwater at catchment scale, focusing on the Modder river catchment. IoT has turned out to be a standout amongst the most sought-after research subjects today. On the other hand, the concept of groundwater sustainability considers a long to medium term approach to management of groundwater. The methodology involved a...

Food security remains an important aspect of human lives and the vital role of soil in the global agricultural and food crops production is obvious. The quality of agricultural products which is being consumed by human through the food chain is dependent on the condition of the soil. Previous gold mining activities resulted in the discharge of tailing materials containing various hazardous trace metals such as manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu),...

Background: Many African children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) do not receive adequate treatment services despite the availability of effective treatments. Studies have majorly concentrated on assessing the contribution of knowledge deficit among parents while neglecting teachers who play a significant role in their upbringing. TPS 681: Short-term health effects of air pollutants 1, Exhibition Hall, Ground floor, August 26, 2019, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Background: Due to climate change, an increase of 34°C in ambient temperature is projected along the South African coast and 6-7°C inland during the next 80 years. Very few studies in Africa investigated effect modification by a temperature indicator (e.g. apparent temperature, Tapp) on the human health effects of air pollution. Methods: Respiratory disease (RD) admission...

The present work reports on the study and the comparison of the performance of three “Génie rural” (GR) and two Water Balance (WB) models. The calibration and robustness performances are analysed in the light of the hydro-climatic conditions. The study shows that the GR models are much more efficient and robust than the WB models. The behaviour of calibration performance as a function of hydroclimatic variables varies according to the model and goodness-of-fit criteria (GOFC). The GR models...

Diabetes is a non-communicable disease associated with increased level of glucose due to inadequate supply of insulin (known as Type 1 diabetes) or inability to use insulin efficiently (known as Type 2 diabetes). Though the exact cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown, the probable causes are genetics and environmental factors (such as exposure to viruses). On the other hand, Type 2 diabetes is largely linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices. In Nigeria, many people are believed to be living with...

This paper reveals how a multiple case study approach, following an interpretive philosophy, may be adopted to profoundly understand factors and actors for sustaining m-learning adoption and usage within higher educational institutions from students perspective. Therefore, the use of Actor Network Theory (ANT) encapsulated unambiguous findings which might not have been possible to achieve, extract or uncover had traditional adoption, acceptance and use theoretical frameworks been adopted....
