This study which aimed to determine the susceptibility patterns of seven often prescribed antimicrobial agents for treatment of gonorrhoea in Kumasi, Ghana, over a study period of 3 years (1991 through 1993), examined a total of 1187 specimens (high vaginal, cervical and urethral). Identification of N. gonorrhoeae was by colonial morphology, oxidase test, sugar fermentation test and the Gram-stain. The challenges facing the information worker in Africa are multifarious considering the fact that the users of information in Africa are the most heterogeneous in the world, ranging from the starkly illiterate to the most educated elite. In this situation, the curricula of information training institutions in Africa should reflect this reality. Unfortunately, the curricula of library and information science schools in Africa are geared towards the educated elites, as there is hardly any...

This article discusses the main results of a comprehensive tracer survey of Form IV school‐leavers from urban and rural secondary schools in Zimbabwe during the mid‐to‐late 1980s. The principle finding of the survey is that the incidence of wage employment in early 1991 when the survey was undertaken was much higher than expected. Half of the 1985 school‐leavers were in some kind of wage employment. However, the employment experiences of males and females were markedly different, with 50 to...

A detailed palynological analysis of two cores recovered from a swamp in the Southern Batéké Plateaux (Congo), provides information on the botanical history of this region during the last 24,000 yr B.P. Rich and well-diversified pollen counts exhibit changes in the vegetational communities related to hydrological and climatic fluctuations. Around 24,000 yr B.P., the occurrence of hydromorphous forest elements gives evidence of a humid phase. Between 24,000 and around 13,000 yr B.P., swampy...

Abstract The mfecane refers to the wars and migrations which took place in southern Africa between the 1810s and 1840s. Historians have long debated its causes, as well as drawn radically different conclusions from it about the “nature” of Africans. Most controversially, it has been used to reify African “tribalism” and justify apartheid. The present process of democratization in the region has renewed controversy as ethnic groups use versions of mfecane history to back special claims. From...

IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA, parents' and students' expectations regarding the connection between education and the cash economy contradict the social and economic experience of adult life. Drawing on research from three urban‐oriented primary schools in the province of West New Britain, I show that teachers unknowingly promote a new moral order through the hidden curriculum of classroom instruction. This moral order celebrates the “modern life” of urban values and the cash economy at the expense of...

persist. A great deal of sentiment and research, both pro and con, about the merits of ability grouping are recorded in the literature (Noland and Taylor 1986). Though recent syntheses and reviews of past research criticize many research designs and do not support the practice of ability grouping in increasing academic achievement (Drahozol and Hanna 1978; Epstein 1980; Esposito 1971; Kirp and Youdof 1974; Nevi 1987; Persell 1976; Slavin 1987, 1988, 1990), the average educator seems to be...

One hundred and three hospitalised urban pre-school Nigerian children aged 2 weeks to 4 years with various acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI), were studied prospectively over a 9- month period (August 1985 - April 1986). Overlapping seasonal peaks, corresponding to the rainy/early harmattan months of August through November were most noticeable for the two major viral ALRI syndromes namely, bronchiolitis and croup.
