The early Proterozoic Transvaal (TR) and Soutpansberg (SB) successions in South Africa are composed of sediments and variable amounts of volcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks are chiefly tholeiitic in character and in some formations range from mafic to felsic in composition. Except for Machadodorp basalts, all volcanics exhibit Nb-Ta depletion relative to Th and REE. Machadodorp basalts are relatively depleted in incompatible elements and some exhibit flat to depleted LREE patterns like MORB....

To determine whether epithelial ion transport is physiologically important for lung water clearance after birth, the sodium transport inhibitor amiloride or its vehicle saline was given intratracheally to newborn full-term guinea pigs before the first breath. Guinea pigs given saline intratracheally breathed normally and had arterial O2 saturations (SaO2) greater than 94%. In contrast, guinea pigs that had an estimated 10(-4) M intra-alveolar concentration of amiloride had chest wall...

Source parameters have been determined for the earthquake (M s 5.6) that occurred offshore of Tripoli, Libya, on September 4, 1974. One nodal plane of its focal mechanism has dip 37°, strike 297°, and rake −141°, indicating oblique normal faulting. This nodal plane is subparallel to many west‐northwest striking normal faults in the epicentral area and is most likely the fault plane, indicating a component of right‐lateral strike‐slip with slip vector azimuth N84°E. Recent studies portray African education in a state of stress. Since it is widely believed that education is critical to development, proposals for addressing this crisis have been numeroas and frequent.
