Volcanic rocks of the Samburu Hills are composed mainly of basaltic lava flows (ankaramite, olivine basalt and hawaiite) intercalated with differentiated rock lava flows and welded tuffs (trachyte and alkali rhyolite). Basaltic rocks of various ages, from Miocene to Recent, were collected from an area of 10 x I 0 km 2 (Suguta Area) and their petrography and petrochemistry are described. A decrease in degree of silica-undersaturation with time from alkali basalts to transitional basalts can...

The study was designed to measure the consumer knowledge and attitudes of college students enrolled at a representative Kenyan college. It was hypothesized that six variables (sex, academic level in college, academic major, rural or urban upbringing, having work experience and having completed a course in consumer education) would not be associated with achievement on the 47‐item test or with the seven consumer attitude questions. The instrument was developed by the researcher for use in...

Miocene rocks in the west of Baragoi, northern Kenya, consist of the Nachola. ~a Aiteputh, Namurungule and Kongia Formations in ascending order. Two kinds of hominoid. Kenyapithecus and a large hominoid (Samburu hominoid). were found from the Nachola and Namurungule Formations. respectively, in summer 1982. Two fission-track and six K-Ar ages were determined on the volcanic rocks to clarify the ages of the hominoid fossils. Paleomagnetic recon naissance was also conducted for the sake of...

Many mothers from developing countries including Nigeria are introducing their babies to artificial milk feeding early in life. This is probably due to the rapidly increasing female education whereby working mothers had to go back to work 6–8 weeks after delivery. In this study, only 31·4% of the mothers wholly breast fed their babies at confinement in spite of the health educational activities of breast feeding practices during antenatal clinic (A.N.C.) attendances. Breast feeding declined...

Thirty-three babies and their mothers, all school girls, identified out of a total of 576 admissions to the Paediatric unit of the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa , Nigeria over a three month period were studied. Twenty (60.0%) of the babies were newborn, nine (45%) of whom were premature. Jaundice and infections were other common diagnoses in the neonates. Among the 13 children aged over one month protein-energy malnutrition, gastroenteritis and pneumonia were the commonest reasons for...

Abstract This study investigated the level of concept attainment of selected energy concepts for possible inclusion in the Nigerian (Bendel State) Primary Science Project (BPSP). Using an experimental design suggested by Solomon (1949), subjects were taught energy concepts at three levels—descriptive, comparative and quantitative. Results showed that levels of concept comprehension were hierarchical with a signficant decrease in achievement from descriptive to comparative and quantitative...

Africa, with an area of 30.5 million km2, is the Earth's second largest continent, and presents the most extreme climatic contrasts. The Sahara is the largest and most extreme desert; Mount Cameroon is one of the rainiest places in the world; and the Congo River, which accounts for 30% of the runoff of the entire continent, is the world's second-ranking river in terms of discharge. This great diversity of climates and hydrological structures has been accentuated by very sharp variations over time and space.

The ideals and aims which motivate radical third world student movements generally reflect broader popular aspirations for political and socioeconomic change. Such movements are political in the sense that, going beyond narrow educational goals and sectional concerns, they champion the interests and struggles of oppressed classes and nations. Indeed, in underdeveloped societies where classes tend to be weakly grounded in forces and relations of production, and as such lack adequate material...

Some chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of three soils developed in volcanic ash at altitudes of 1040 m, 1720 m, and 2350 m in Papua New Guinea's Enga Province are presented. Silt-fraction mineralogy and total chemical analyses show that fresh ash occurs in the upper approximately 30 cm of profile at each site. This fresh ash is probably only a few thousand years old and overlies an older weathered ash (Tomba Tephra;more than 50000 years old). At the lowest site the majority of...

This paper attempts to present a brief history of school psychology in Egypt, to outline its major trends, to evaluate its current status, and to give some guides for its future. The analysis shows that when psychology was presented for the first time in 1929 it took the form of educational psychology. In 1934 a version of educational psychology similar to school psychology was introduced in the Higher Institute of Education (now Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University), with the progress...

A standardized-item survey of drug taking was administered to 239 Nigerian students attending three American universities. Alcohol was the most widely used drug in the sample (current use by 64%), followed by tobacco (31.8% current use), cannabis (13.9%), and amphetamine and other stimulants (5.3%). Differences are reported between males and females, and among age groups and college levels. Levels of drug taking were high but no higher than those commonly reported for U.S. college students.
