In this article, I explore Somali refugee mothers’ acts of becoming literate in order to support their children’s educational success. The literature on parent support and involvement makes fleeting reference to the forces of globalisation; it also pays little attention to refugee parents as being agents of, or subject to, such forces. Research into education and development, as it relates to adult learners, focuses mainly on higher education, economics and labour market issues (Kenway &...

Attempts have been made to investigate the relationships between various earthquake magnitude scales for the region of the Gulf of Guinea, namely moment magnitude (Mw), surface wave magnitude (Ms), body wave magnitude (mb) and local magnitude (ML). The study involves a sum of 535 earthquake data from the period of 1918 to 2016. It was found that Ms−Mw;Mw−ML and mb−Mw scales are in fairly good agreement while mb−Ms magnitude scale differs by a magnitude unit of 1.45. Since the region of study...

Abstract Increased industrial, commercial and transport activities have constantly introduced air pollutants such as heavy metals in the atmosphere. Roadside dust samples were collected from 10 locations along Ota-Benin road, analysed for Cr, Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, Fe, Mn, Cu, As and Zn, and the ecological risk was evaluated for the heavy metals’ concentration in the roadside dust particles using the Hakanson method. The results revealed that Cd (3.103 mg/kg) and Cu (mg/kg) surpassed the threshold...

Abstract Within diverse cohorts, African Americans (AA) demonstrate higher rates of Alzheimer’s dementia (AD) and Alzheimer’s dementia combined with multiple comorbid conditions. AA are also two times more likely to develop late-onset AD than whites and less likely to be diagnosed. Yet, our understanding of this disparity in cognition remains limited. Cognitive impairment (CI) and dementia are both underdiagnosed and underreported in primary care patients. The lack of early detection of...

The active magmatic processes beneath volcanoes in continental rifts is poorly understood. For example, until recently in the East African rift (EAR), the majority of the young volcanoes were thought to be inactive. More recent studies have shown that numerous volcanoes in the EAR are seismically active and deforming rapidly. However, an unambiguous sign of actively degassing magma hosted in shallow magma bodies has eluded most investigators. Here we present detailed analysis of the first...
