A review of 31 cases of unoperated cleft lip and palate patients aged 10 years and above managed over a 6 years period at a suburban Nigeria teaching hospital is presented. There was an overall preponderance of the female gender and isolated cleft lip (58%) was the most predominant. One thousand, one hundred and thirty-five pupils were examined for CSOM in a rural community of Kwara State of Nigeria. The prevalence of CSOM was 73 per 1000 pupils. The highest is seen among the age group of 2-5 years. Unilateral disease was most prevalent (79.5%); 99% of the pupils had tubotympanic disease. Active disease was observed in 27.7% of the cases of CSOM.

In this paper the author suggests that Africa had a systematic, coordinated system of the theory and practice of lifelong learning that was afflicted by colonial rule and subjugation and suffered a severe setback with the introduction of Western education and modernisation. However the remnants that have survived seem to be lasting and self-sustaining. Lifelong learning in Indigenous Africa is described and recommendations for a more relevant and responsive lifelong learning program in Africa are given.
