Parental education and family structure are less predictive of high school grades for African Americans than for whites. Community socioeconomic status predicts grades for both groups. The failure of family statuses to predict grades for African Americans appears related to the ethnic mix, and not socioeconomic status, in the residential community. Living in a census tract with a substantial proportion of minority residents affects whites as well as African Americans, reducing the influence...

In humans, the rate and clinical expression of disease in congenitally cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected infants is modified by maternal immunity to CMV. We used the guinea pig model of congenital CMV infection to compare maternal CD4+ T-cell numbers in nonpregnant animals to those in pregnant dams just before and 7-14 days after inoculation with guinea pig CMV (gpCMV) very early, early, or late in gestation. We also examined ELISA antibody responses to gpCMV in the inoculated nonpregnant and...

An earthquake which occurred off the northern Mozambique gives a peculiar feature of P‐waves recorded by WWSSN long period instruments. All the P‐waveforms can be divided into two parts: the amplitude of the first arriving phase varies from station to station, which is consistent with the normal fault type solution of the Harvard CMT solution determined by the long period GDSN data. The amplitude of the second phase, in contrast, is fairly constant over all the stations, inconsistent with...

Many recent studies have reported a convergence in the scores of males and females on spatial tests; however, these studies also indicate different amounts of convergence. There are indications that spatial differences continue to exist. It was decided to study such differences in spatial ability on two different tests for two groups of South African first-year university students (ns = 60), one from arts and one from the sciences. In all comparisons statistically significant differences were found between the sexes.

Chronic renal failure is associated with abnormalities in lipoprotein metabolism that may contribute to premature atherosclerosis and early mortality in patients on dialysis. In previous studies, we found that plasma clearance of radiolabelled low density lipoprotein (LDL) was retarded in nephrectomized guinea pigs left with one-sixth of normal functioning renal mass. To elucidate potential mechanisms of delayed LDL clearance, we compared binding of LDL to hepatic membranes from both normal...

For 568 boys and 698 girls (ages 8 to 17 years), Neuroticism scores were reliable and factorially valid for both sexes but reliability and validity for Extraversion were modest and, while reliable, 45% of Lie scale items did not load on their factor of origin. Also, Psychoticism scores were unreliable and factorially invalid. Careful item analyses must be undertaken and the construct of psychoticism verified.
