The aim of this article is to establish, by means of content analysis, how and with what purpose the print media, accused of perpetuating racism in South African society, report on racism in education, a social relationship that also seems to be constructed in ways that seem racist. In the micro-context, the following themes have been identified in a study of reports on racial violence in South African schools: both black and white parents, learners and other role players deny that they are...

While serious efforts are underway to improve the information infrastructure of the developing world, major shortcomings in information flow continue to make much of Africa invisible to the rest of the world, and invisible to itself. Whether it is where managers go for technical training, the fight for reliable phone lines, old patterns of mail delivery, new patterns of television broadcasting (e.g. cheap shows such as Baywatch), or the daily struggles to publish basic books, information...

Abstract The present study employed the psychometric high‐risk method to investigate psychosis proneness in African‐American and Caucasian college students recruited from three sites. The goals of the study were to develop norms for African‐American students on the Perceptual Aberration (Chapman, Chapman, & Raulin, 1978), Magical Ideation (Eckblad & Chapman, 1983), Revised Social Anhedonia (Eckblad, Chapman, Chapman, & Mishlove, 1982), and Physical Anhedonia Scales (Chapman,...

Technology will have an increasingly serious impact on the way educational institutions define their markets, present their services (especially training) and also perceive other role players. In South Africa, technological developments must be used as a multiplier to solve the escalating problem of the massification of education. At the same time it should not only account for the demographics and unfortunate recent history of the country, but also restructure the educational system to rise...

In the developed world obesity among children is becoming such a problem that some are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile a starving Ethiopian child is reported as saying he is so hungry he is willing to die.

Vegetation cover estimated from satellite data and woody plant density derived from aerial photos were used to assess the effect of land use impacts with respect to climate in the semi-arid lands of Botswana. The results showed that there is a high risk of long-term land use impacts under current climatic conditions. The land use response pattern to climate change in the semi-arid lands of southern Africa can be modeled with the aid of remote sensing to determine future impacts on the landscape.

Multi-frequency polarimetric Shuttle Imaging Radar-C (SIR-C) data acquired in October 1994 were analyzed for the Virunga Volcanic Chain, East Africa. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data can be used to define the roughness, texture, orientation, and dielectric properties of scattering elements of volcanic surfaces. SIR-C acquired C- and L-band SAR in two polarizations, horizontal transmit and receive (HH), and horizontal transmit and vertical receive (HV). The SAR backscatter from the...

Didactic approaches to teaching about Africa are problematic for several reasons: they do not benefit students pedagogically; they cast Western academy/academics as guardians of truth about Africa; and they cast students as possible receptacles of objective knowledge of Africa. An approach based on 'border pedagogy' offers a helpful alternative. This paper outlines the advantages of using films from/about Africa to achieve this. A level 3 UK undergraduate module is outlined, and the eight...

The relationship between Ascaris lumbricoides infection and provisions for safe water supply and excreta disposal was investigated in Ajebandele and Ifewara, 2 peri-urban communities near Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, from September 1998 to December 1999. Although there were more facilities for safe water supply (pipe-borne and shallow wells) and sanitation (flush toilets and pit latrines) in Ajebandele than in Ifewara, they were not evenly distributed and only a few families, mainly in...
