Recent studies in water quality management have focused on the use of benthic macroinvertebrates in the environmental impact assessment of pollution on aquatic communities. The benthic macroinvertebrates of a stream passing through Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, were studied. Eleven taxa, comprising a total of 290,607 individuals, were collected. The tubificid Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was the most abundant species contributing over 99 % of the total invertebrates. Faunal distribution...

In this study, marine surface sediments are collected from nine locations along the Suez Canal in order to investigate the relationship between the morphology of sands in the studied beaches and pollution by oil. Basically, the studied samples were analyzed by three techniques: grain-size analysis, microscopic examination, and gas chromatographic (GC) analysis. This study concluded that “medium sand” is the major class represented in the studied marine sediments. Pollution in these sand...

This paper presents new seismic hazard maps of the Maghreb countries by using newly re-evaluated earthquake data catalogue in the region under consideration. For this region, there is a clear need to use common procedure and data bases through the whole Maghreb region so that seismic hazard assessments are consistent from country to country. An effort is made to assess the seismic hazard and to construct earthquake hazard maps in terms of expected horizontal and vertical PGA for a 10 per...

In South Africa, the post-apartheid government has committed itself to an integrated approach to education and training. This article addresses South African policy debates, illustrating that global trends such as integration are shaped by significant local influences in the production of specific policy positions. The southern African region is susceptible to climatic extremes and particularly to extended dry periods. Possible changes in the probability of dry years under doubled-CO2 conditions are examined using output from the CSIRO nine-level general circulation model. Changes in annual mean rainfall are not expected to be significant. However, the model simulates an increase in the probability of dry years in the tropics, to the south-west of the subcontinent, as well as over the western and...
