A plea is made for diversion of urine by suprapubic cystostomy as initial treatment in clinically established urethral injury. When early retrograde urethrography is not possible this study should be done between 3 and 6 weeks after injury, when infection or extravasation of urine at the injured site might have cleared. The quality of x-ray at this time is good and helps to determine the definitive treatment of the resultant stricture, if any. Good results were achieved in 32 patients...

abstract We present a study of the El Asnam, Algeria, earthquake of 10 October 1980 from a large collection of long-period surface and body wave records. The focal mechanism of the main shock is well constrained by the P-wave first motions at teleseismic distances and field observations: it was a thrust event on a plane striking N45°E, and a dip angle of 54° to the north. It had a small component of left-lateral motion (λ = 83°) (Ouyed et al., 1981; Gaudemer et al., 1981). This earthquake...

One thousand two hundred and ninety-six pre-school and school children were examined in the first screening programme for ocular anomalies in Maseru, Lesotho. One hundred and eighteen children (8.9%) were found to have significant ocular anomalies requiring treatment. The most common anomalies included refractive errors, squint, convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, vernalis, lid abnormalities, leukoma cornea, and cataract. The importance of school screening for ocular anomalies in a developing African nation is emphasized.

Abstract This study reports an investigation of the perceptions of Nigerian adolescents concerning problems of different classes of older adults in Nigeria. A sample of 1,063 students from secondary schools and universities completed a questionnaire about adult life in Nigeria. Results show that the primary sources of information about aging are personal observation and instructions from community elders, friends, and peer groups. It was also found that both the educated and illiterate aged...

The uterus is supplied with an extensive system of adrenergic nerves. The neurobiological properties of this innervation have been investigated using the guinea-pig as a model. The guinea-pig uterus is supplied from three different sources: from the paracervical plexus, containing short adrenergic neurons, from the inferior mesentric ganglion, and from a cranial source, probably the aortico-renal plexus, via nerves in the uterine suspensory ligaments. The nerve density is higher in the tubal...

Health education plays an important role in the primary health care process, particularly in the training of village health workers. Three educational concepts, training based on community felt needs, trainee involvement and social and cultural realism, are essential in designing these programs. These concepts were applied over a three year period in the training of village health caretakers in Idere town of Oyo State, Nigeria. Volunteer village health workers from ten villages were able to...

A 32-item standardized multiple-choice and open-ended questionnaire was completed by nearly 500 male and female secondary school students in two rapidly developing Nigerian towns. About two thirds of the students reported some exposure to alcohol, and about one quarter reported some experience with tobacco. There was much less use of caffeine, methaqualone in combination with diphenhydramine, 2-ethylamino-3-phenylorcamphane in combination with vitamins, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, cannabis...

To determine to what extent disabled students may be selected and integrated into the regular schools in Nigeria, normal and blind students were compared for differences in selective attention in a task involving letters and numbers. It was predicted that, because of the sociocultural stigma attached to blindness, normal students (n = 21) would perform better than blind students (n = 21). The hypothesis was substantiated.
