This study was done with the aim of assessing the intellectual maturity of children attending typical free primary schools in Ibadan. Human figure drawings produced by 416 boys and 766 girls attending two non-fee paying primary schools were scored using the scoring system introduced by Koppitz. Snellen's chart was used to screen 965 pupils (538 boys, 427 girls) in all-male and all-female post-primary schools in Benin City. 19·9% of males and 25·6% of females were found to have a minor defect of distant vision. The peak age when pupils develop this abnormality is between 13 and 14 years.
