近年,中国の対アフリカ貿易・投資の急増に伴い,中国とアフリカの間に様々な軋轢が発生している。他方で,中国政府はアフリカにおいても孔子学院の建設を推進し,その活動を積極的に支援している。筆者は孔子学院が中国とアフリカ間の軋轢を乗り越える手段となりうるかを検討する為に,2013年1月に,西アフリカのトーゴとベナンの孔子学院で対面式アンケートを行った。本稿では,そのアンケート結果からトーゴとベナンの孔子学院で学ぶ学生の属性と学習動機および満足度を示し,トーゴ孔子学院に比べて,ベナン孔子学院の回答者が孔子学院での学習状況に満足しており,中国が好きな程度も高いことを明らかにした。しかし,多くの中国人と中国系企業のアフリカ文化と法律に対する理解が不十分であるため,アフリカ諸国では,中国企業と現地企業の対立や労働者の労働争議問題も目立つ。今後,孔子学院はアフリカに進出する中国企業・中国人のアフリカ文化への理解を深める教育を行うことも重要であると思われる。
