The concept “falling standard of Education” is a relative term. This is because there are no well defined instruments to measure it with utmost reliability and validity. That is why scholars' views on the concept vary. These scholars view it from different perspectives depending on the angle each of them is looking at it. This paper therefore, highlights and explains in details the causes of falling standard of education in Nigeria and finally, suggests the way forward in order to improve the educational system in the country.

This paper introduces an analytical framework that attempts to provide explanations for these behaviours by locating Capability Approach concepts within a Critical Realist theory of causation. Qualitative data from three primary schools will contextualise this framework and demonstrate how criticised practices are often a product of teachers contending with...

For many children around the world, access to higher education and the labour market depends on becoming fluent in a second language. This presents a challenge to education policy: when and how in the school programme should a transition to the second language occur? While a large theoretical literature exists, empirical evidence is limited by the difficulties inherent to measuring the causal effect of language of instruction. In South Africa, the majority of children do not speak English as...

Have recent expansions of access to primary schooling in African countries led to deterioration in the quality of education delivered? This paper helps clarify this question by presenting an appropriate conceptual framework: instead of considering country average test scores and enrolment rates in isolation, we argue that the important outcome of interest is the proportion of children in an age-specific population that reach particular levels of literacy and numeracy.
