This article examines the unique challenges facing Kenya’s public higher education institutions. It explores the struggle to develop quality and quality assurance mechanisms against a background of rapidly diminishing income, brain drain, political interference and the negative aspects of globalisation. The challenges have consequently led to a decline in the quality of education and left higher education hanging on a thread. The article argues that the higher education sector requires clear...

To the Editor: Transfusion-transmitted syphilis, which is caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum, is one of the oldest recognized infectious risks of blood transfusion (1). Routine screening of blood donors and refrigeration of donated blood before its use has resulted in only 3 reported cases of transfusion-transmitted syphilis over the past 4 decades (2–6). The World Health Organization recommends screening all donated blood for syphilis (7), but doing so is challenging for...

Transfusion transmitted syphilis has been scarcely reported in medical literature in recent decades. In this study conducted in a teaching hospital where donated blood is not screened for syphilis, paired blood samples were obtained from two hundred units of blood and from the recipients of these blood transfusions. Recipients who were later found to have received blood that was sero-positive for syphilis were recalled for follow up examination and testing. The prevalence of syphilis...

The thesis of this article is that the uncritical adoption of Western models of education management and leadership policies results in poor performance in schools in disadvantaged communities in developing countries. The argument shows that this has led to the institutionalization of generic education policies that are not contingent to the circumstances of the small, dispersed, rural and remote schools. In my analysis, I agree with the growing concern in educational development debates...

An initial section highlights the early effors to include Muslim girls in the civilizing mission through the creation of Mme Luce’s Arab-French...

Autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) is a genetically heterogenous disorder with 41 genes so far identified. Among these genes, ESRRB whose mutations are responsible for DFNB35 hearing loss in Pakistani and Turkish families. This gene encodes the estrogen-related receptor beta. In this study, we report a novel mutation (p.Y305H) in the ESRRB gene in a Tunisian family with ARNSHL. This mutation was not detected in 100 healthy individuals. Molecular modeling showed that the...

A great problem faced by many South African teachers is how to incorporate cultural knowledge in their teaching, starting at the Foundation Phase (Primary school level). Learning from different cultural backgrounds can be made valuable, interesting and exciting if approached multi-culturally, especially in a Life Orientation teacher training programme at the Higher Education Institution, that is, University. Unfortunately, the term ‘multicultural’ is interpreted differently by many...

Rwanda has a high rate of rural poverty, population density and pressures on its natural resource base. One government response has been a social protection intervention, the Vision 2020 Umurenge Programme (VUP). VUP provides ‘public works’ employment for members of extremely poor households with able-bodied members, and ‘direct support’ cash transfers for poor households without members who can work. Many public works projects focus on environmental protection. VUP also promotes risk...
