The Lower Carboniferous (Visean) successions of the Meseta region of central Morocco are dominated by mixed marine carbonate and terrigenous facies bearing the biological and sedimentological hallmarks of deposition in a neritic environment. This study concerns two inter-related types of sedimentary unit, relatively uncommon but displaying features not readily compatible with the depositional mechanisms conventionally envisaged for such an environment. They are described with reference to...

Volcanic activity in central Papua New Guinea began in the Upper Triassic with submarine and terrestrial eruption of andesitic and dacitic lavas on and adjacent to the north-east corner of the Palaeozoic Australian continental crust. Minor basaltic to rhyolitic eruptions took place during the Jurassic in the same general area. During the Cretaceous, volcanic activity increased in intensity and distribution, spreading to the north and west (Fig.1), and produced mainly andesitic lavas, both...

To think of the planting of Christianity in Africa and the work of missions and churches is to think of schools, of these agencies ‘throwing across tropical Africa their gigantic fishing net of primary and secondary schools’. And to think of the African peoples themselves over the past century is to recall the swelling demand for education above almost everything else. Back in 1902 this was well expressed in the exhortation of King Lewanika to his Lozi council: ‘Marotse, leave your shades,...

WITH the decline of the classics in the high schools at the turn of the century, history gained its legitimacy as a school subject in the Western world. In Britain, for example, the struggle to have history taught as a separate subject in the high schools was won only in 1917.' Nigeria can be said to be lucky in this regard, for although it came into existence as a nation only in 1914, the teaching of history was accepted from the founding of education in the country. However, in spite of...

A social survey was carried out on 60 surviving children who suffered from severe kwashiorkor, using 60 "normal" peers drawn from the same socio-economic area. The impact of local under five clinics in the area with regard to health education and health care was assessed and found to be inadequate, despite the large number of clinics available. The replacement of these under five clinics by "at risk" clinics for children of all ages within the framework of a community health centre was suggested.

In virtually all populations, the prevalence of dental caries is increasing. To elucidate the local situation, especially as regards the influence of sugar intake, appropriate studies, In association with dental research workers, were made on 16-17-year-old pupils in four South African ethnic groups-Back, Coloured, Indian and White. As expected, the caries situation in Whites was poor, and in rural Blacks, excellent; data on Coloureds and Indians were intermediate. The most outstanding...
