Although a few trade unions had been formed in Nigeria before 1938, it was not until after the passage in that year of the Trades Union Ordinance by the Nigerian government that many trade unions were formed by Nigerian workers. Between 1940 and 1950, some 144 trade unions with a membership of over 144,000 were formed (Nigeria 1940-1950), and the prospects for further trade union growth were very bright. With the increase in the number of unions as time went on, the country was rocked by a...

A new geography syllabus for the East African Certificate of Education has recently been approved. It is scheduled to be introduced for study at form three level of a secondary school in January 1972, and to be examined for the first time in November 1973. Because it differs so radically in several ways from the old Cambridge Oversea School Certificate geography syllabus, many questions have been asked about it: why a new geography syllabus at all? Volcanism on the Arabo-Ethiopian swell has accompanied the development of the three traversing spreading zones conjoining at Afar: the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and African rift systems. The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden floors are formed by oceanic tholeiites, but Afar and the main Ethiopian rift show a wider range of more alkaline volcanics. related to slower crustal spreading rates. The high plateaus between the rifts have had a strongly alkaline volcanism. The plateau basalts and especially the...

Some groups of preliminary year indigenous students at the University of Papua and New Guinea were Ss for an investigation of concept selection strategies among students from a non-Western culture. Some of the methods of Bruner, Goodnow, and Austin (1) were replicated. It was found that in forming conjunctive categories the students were consistent in maintaining a definite strategy, that more students adopted a scanning strategy, and that focusers were the most successful. Mixed strategists...

The Upper Cenozoic volcanic formations associated with the Kenya rift valley are divided into seven main stratigraphic groups representing widespread ‘plateau’ formations, and a number of central volcano groups of more localised occurrence. 75 K/Ar isotopic age determinations including 30 unpublished dates are listed and the age-range of most of the volcanic groups is given. A tabulation of the sequence of volcanic groups is provided and their distribution is illustrated. The Kenya rift...
