One of the charges levelled at RPL is that it is a "soft option" in higher education. It appears to offer easy access into higher education, and relatively undemanding ways of gaining credit. This article investigates these assumptions and identifies the demands of a portfolio development approach in RPL. South African Journal of Higher Education Vol.16(2) 2002: 63-68

The study investigated the leadership practices of selected leaders of the Department of Education in Papua New Guinea to (a) uncover subordinates' and leaders' perspectives of both positive and negative leadership practices, (b) analyse what constituted such practices, (c) discuss and interpret the extent to which these practices could be said to be 'neo-colonial' or 'transformational' and, in the light of the findings, ( d) to suggest how leadership could be improved. In doing so the study...

The study explored self-concept of students in two stages- a) gender and grade differences, and b) its relation with future identity. Self-concept is ones overall idea of a sense of self, with multi dimensions of self in reference to others. Future identity refers to youths awareness of lifes work in future. In the first stage, 381 students (191 females and 190 males, from seventh grade through under-graduate level) attempted an inventory measuring multi dimensions of self-concept. They...

Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) is proposed here as an effective basis for bridging educational gaps and for promoting crosscultural co-existence and integration. A series of controlled studies in South Africa with pre-service teachers from a disadvantaged community, and with students of different cultural groups, developed and tested programmes based on MLE and on its vehicles, the Instrumental Enrichment (IE) thinking skills programme and the Learning Potential Assessment Device (LPAD)....

What are the predicted economic impacts of climate change in South Africa? This paper attempts to provide preliminary estimates based on secondary data from the findings of the Vulnerability and Adaptation Study for the South African Country Study on Climate Change (1999). The impacts on natural, agricultural, human-made and human capital are addressed using the change in production approach..Findings include the following:Tourism may be affected due to a loss of habitats and biodiversity,...

Microalbuminuria, a predictive tool in both diabetics and hypertensive, is associated with an increase in vascular mortality and morbidity in the healthy population. A cohort of apparently healthy medical students was screened for microalbuminuria using micral test strips. Data on history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, renal disease and smoking were collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire. Blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) were recorded in all subjects....

The study determined the impact of a community-based nutrition education programme, using trained community nutrition advisors, on the anthropometric nutritional status of mixed-race children aged between 2 and 5 years. The programme was implemented over two years in four study areas in the Free State and Northern Cape Provinces. Two control areas were included to differentiate between the effect of the education programme and a food aid programme that were implemented simultaneously....

Among the descriptions of learning styles that characterize African American children, communalism and cooperative learning have been offered. The current investigation explored the developmental nature of this dimension among 2- to 5-year-old girls and boys (N = 44). Help-seeking behaviors were observed and coded. Variable frequencies (source of help, age, type of help solicitation, and kind of activity) were tallied, and associations between variables were examined. Associations between...

Background: As in most African countries there is no national preschool or school eye screening service in Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to conduct school eye screening in Butajira town to identify the causes of ocular morbidity and subnormal vision in school children and suggest possible intervention strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1846 students from Mekicho (1397) and Dobo-tuto (449) junior and elementary schools of Butajira Town selected by systematic random...

Earthquakes registered on the same day by a network of stations were assumed to come from the same source or event. Matrix equations were developed using simple geometry laws and standard empirical relationships governing tremors in Ethiopia. The solutions of these equations yielded 71 epicenters. The plot of the epicenters revealed two major sources, one a fault plane running from NW plane into NE plane and the other appears to be an area source in the SW plane. The mean value of epicenters...

Background Renal transplantation is the therapy of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, African Americans’ (AA) access to this modality is not commensurate with that of other races. This imbalance, coupled with AA disproportionately representing those with ESRD, has kept AA disadvantaged compared with other races, especially whites. Methods We reviewed published reports that examined the connection between race and the incidence of chronic renal failure, access...

Research participants were three hundred and sixty-eight (103 male and 265 female) students from four universities in South Africa. Two major findings were obtained. First, the majority of the items in the inventory were reliable and valid for...

Part of the reason for the low numbers of African-America nurses is related to nursing student attrition. One approach described to help students to successfully complete educational objectives is mentoring. Mentoring is a supportive act for both minority students and faculty. Although numerous definitions of mentoring exist it is recognized that a mentor can be a role model, confidante, friend, and support system. Mentors may be the passageway into the work force or a bypass around the many...
