When expatriate academics teach Papua New Guineans, there is often a cultural dynamic at play that is inconsistent with that operating in ‘Western’ universities. Insights into some of these issues, particularly language, may assist expatriates to restructure accepted assumptions about teaching and learning in English to more appropriately meet the needs of students from a different culture. This paper argues that language problems occur because students are educated in a language in which...

Geological and geochemical data on three occurrences of intraplate Mesozoic volcanics in the Eastern Desert of Egypt are presented. The rock types range from alkali olivine basalts to trachytes and mostly occur in the form of dykes and plugs. The basalts exhibit a phenocryst assemblage of olivine + clinopyroxene + plagioclase + titanomagnetite. Their normalised trace element patterns and elemental ratios (e.g. Th/Nb and Rb/Sr) are very similar to those of ocean-island basalts. Such trace...

Pollution of the environment is becoming an increasingly serious problem. A large contributor to this is industry which generates effluent as a by-product of its production process. Two methods of controlling the pollution generated by industry are the so-called “command and control” techniques and economic incentives. In theory, economic incentives promise a more economically efficient and equitable means of pollution control. This paper sets out to ascertain whether this would hold in...

New digital technologies offer exciting possibilities for innovation in African language instruction. Teaching pedagogies-methods and approaches-evolve rather slowly when compared with technology. Indeed, there is a widening gap between content and the tools used to acquire it. Separation of the substance of language from technology prevents both instructors and students from fully appreciating the possibilities technology presents and the values that can be derived from it. The instrumental...
