The study critically analyses four studies that focus on the language of instruction in Zimbabwe’s public schools to establish a feasible way of incorporating the mother tongue as a medium of instruction. Prescriptions for mother tongue use in Zimbabwean schools are not working. From the review, it is clear that most proposals researchers have put forward for implementation of mother tongue use are not feasible at the moment. Practically, the mother tongue is used in class oral discourse...

The Republic of Togo, like many African former colonies, has struggled to create a system of vocational education that will aid its efforts to move beyond the status of a satellite to Western economies. We incorporate postcolonial, Deweyan and feminist perspectives to understand how lingering colonialism and neo-colonial forces have hampered reform efforts in one postsecondary vocational program, and have posed a special challenge to the women who comprise the majority of its students. We...

It explores how teachers envision improvements for their professional support structures. The study will employ focus groups and semi-structured interviews to generate dialogue and reflection among participants. Tanzanian schools, though greatly under-resourced, hold the rich capacities of teachers and students. In many foreign...

Over the past thirty years, Africa has suffered from deindustrialization. The quarter century from the early 1980s was a period of declining per capita income and increasing poverty. Structural adjustment policies advocated by the IMF and the World Bank were predicated on the belief that by eliminating “distortions” in the economy, Africa would grow faster - by constructing an economy based on principles of free and unfettered markets, with the government restrained to ensuring...

A typical problem experienced by Computer Application Technology (CAT) learners in mainly township and rural schools is that they do not have access to textbooks out of the classroom. The most common scenario is that these learners have access to textbooks during lessons, but then the books are left behind in class to be shared with other learners. This problem is made worse by the fact that these learners usually also have very little access to computers. Similar problems are experienced...

Post-secondary access in Africa hovers around 6%, in part because there is a lack of access to physical campuses. In Phase I of the African Virtual University’s Multinational Project, 73 undergraduate courses were developed and published as OERs in English, French and Portuguese. These in turn were adopted and localized by African universities. While over 1.3 million downloads of the materials have taken place in the last 5 years, no attempt was made to harness the input of user to maintain...

Many groups in sub-Saharan Africa have historically linked persons with disabilities with witchcraft as a component of a wider link between accusations of witchcraft and socially marginalized populations. It is commonly assumed that traditional prejudices towards persons with disabilities are receding in light of urbanization, education, mass media and efforts to confront such prejudice and stigma by governments, disability advocates and civil society. Ratification of the UN Convention on...

biomass of plant species consumed by the gorillas in 496 plots (ca. 6 km 2 ) in the Karisoke study area in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. We expected to observe a decreased presence of major gorilla food plants as a likely result of density-dependent overharvesting by gorillas. Among the five most frequently consumed species (composing approximately 70% of the gorilla’s diet, excluding bamboo), two have decreased in availability and abundance, while three have increased. Some species have...

This study examines determinants of children’s primary school enrolment. Using the 2005 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data, a Binary Logistic Regression model was fitted to identify the correlates. The findings indicate that the increase in the number of siblings decreases the likelihood of children’s enrolment in early ages but increases at later ages. Poverty, loss of mother, and rural residence reduce the likelihood of enrolment whilst those living in female-headed households...
