The effects of unilateral labyrinthectomy in guinea pigs have been studied on an angular orientation task consisting, in an open field, of running to a hidden goal oriented at 45 degrees with respect to the cephalocaudal axis of the animal placed in a starting-box. The task was conducted in light but in an homogeneous environment, i.e. without visual, auditory or olfactory cues indicating the location of the goal. A second group of animals was submitted to a similar task running to a hidden...

This article is concerned with the effects of national and educational language policies on the quality of primary level instruction in Kenya. It argues that national language policies need to be disentangled from educational matters so that the language used for instruction more directly meets the social as well as the academic requirements of learners. The paper draws on a study of grade eight students' ability to use the mother tongue to write about what has been learned in science...

A survey of the peri-operative policies for blood and blood component therapy was carried out among anaesthetists in the nine South African teaching hospitals. All anaesthetists completed the questionnaire, without recourse to books or discussion. The survey revealed a possible over-utilisation of blood and blood components in the peri-operative period. There were significant deficiencies in the pre-operative assessment of blood and platelet requirements and the specific indications for...

Man-made pollutants, namely, petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and heavy metals as well as microbial pollution in the sediments of the harbour channel have been evaluated. Petroleum hydrocarbons, PCBs and heavy metals (Fe, Pb, Cu, and Zn) are at elevated levels in the port area used for loading and unloading activities. The concentration of the chemicals decreases further offshore, with the exception of cadmium which, surprisingly, is enriched in the sediments at the...

During the last 20,000 years, the mountains of Africa between the Mediterranean and the equator have experienced significant climatic changes with important consequences for the vegetation and resource potential. At about 18,000 B. P. present altitudinal belts were depressed and the zonation of climate and vegetation was changed considerably. In the Holocene, higher temperatures led not only to more humid conditions but also to an uplifting of altitudinal belts and transformation of climatic...

This study examined the influence of educational status and gender on the faculty and students' perceptions of their school climates. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit information from the 385 subjects (320 students and 65 tutors). Analysis using the t-test technique revealed that there were no significant differences at the 0.05 level of probability in the perceptions of: (a) faculty and students on climate variables “thrust” (t = 0.31) and “control” (t = 1.19); and (b) both...

This paper gathers information on the values, cognition, and educational background of African students studying at universities in the United States. The section on values notes that Americans are task-oriented individualists, while Africans are primarily relationship-oriented collectivists. These values of sharing and relationship orientation mean that the African may have difficulty with the notion of strict deadlines for class projects. In the section on cognition the paper shows that...

A pollen sequence in a relatively young hyrax dung midden in the Orange Free State, South Africa, shows marked changes in composition which can be related to environmental fluctuations. The midden from Clarens was dated by radiocarbon to the last thirty years on the basis of recent radiocarbon concentration levels of the atmosphere, which were artificially increased by extensive nuclear arms testing after 1954. Fluctuations in the pollen contents of the dung sequence conform with recent...
