Climate change mitigation and air quality management are mostly addressed separately in South African legal acts and policies. This approach is not always coherent, especially in the context of other serious issues South Africa is facing, such as poverty alleviation. Policies implemented to mitigate climate change might increase negative health affects due to unanticipated outcomes (e.g. increased local air pollution), and these indirect consequences must therefore be taken into account when...

Hurricanes, tropical cyclones and other high-magnitude events are important steering mechanisms in the geomorphic development of coral reef islands. Sandy reef islands located outside the storm belts are strongly sensitive to the impact of occasional high-magnitude events and show abrupt, commonly erosive geomorphic change in response to such events. Based on the interpretation of remote sensing data, it is well known that the process of landform recovery might take several decades or even...

This article assesses mine ventilation systems and air pollution impacts on 4000 artisanal tanzanite miners at Merelani. Concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) in five selected mines averaged 66.2 ppm (with maximum of 102 ppm) which is 2.5 times higher than the maximum concentration specified by Ontario Ministry of Labour (2015). The average level of respirable dust was 8 mg dust/m3 air, which is 4 times higher than the allowable American guidelines for mines. Suffocation accidents consists...
