Art education in Zimbabwe has a rather negative image which dates back to the colonial era. Art was usually confined to wealthy urban schools and taught mostly to white students. The subject was often used as a dumping ground for nonachievers and girls (who had few career options available to them outside of marriage). As a result art was considered an expensive and non‐academic subject in former Rhodesia. The situation did not improve after independence. Art still retains a poor image and...

Based on focus group discussions held with students at rural secondary schools in Lesotho and Zimbabwe, this paper argues that secondary schools provide important spaces for the (re)construction of gendered identities among rural girls in southern Africa. Central to processes of identity formation in rural secondary schools are normative discourses centring on notions of `culture' and `equal rights'. These discourses are (re)produced in secondary schools and are appropriated by students in...

This paper reports on the social relations of rural African American early adolescents and the initial impact of a multilevel universal intervention program aimed at enhancing the productive school engagement of at-risk youth. Students' school social relations were assessed with social cognitive mapping procedures that yield information on peer group membership and social network centrality (i.e., prominence in the social structure). Risk status was determined by cluster analysis of teacher...

An important development in the post-apartheid South Africa was a departure from apartheid education through an outcomes-based curriculum reform. This resulted in several structural and policy tensions within the system. This paper highlights how these tensions have played themselves out and shows how government and stakeholders have addressed the challenges emanating from them. The paper argues that the tensions that dominated the post-apartheid curriculum reform have resulted in a...

In cases of sudden, reversible hearing loss where perilymphatic fistulas are thought to be the cause, a multitude of causes have been postulated. These include perilymphatic pressure changes, Simmons' double-break theory, perilymphatic hemorrhage, pneumolabyrinth, and others. This study was proposed to explore the role pneumolabyrinth may have in this pathology. Guinea pigs were fitted with cochlear perfusion pumps pumping artificial perilymph into the left scala tympani. One group of...

In the current phase of our history, crises abound in many spheres of life - political, ecological, economic, personal, and so on. When crises manifest themselves in society we often turn to education as a panacea for addressing these societal ills as if 'education' might not be part of the problem. All education is ideological in the sense that an educational activity can not be neutral. Educational ideologies have shaped different approaches to environmental education, and have influenced...

This book is generalized around the topic of university student protests and political change. The dearth of scholarly work on issues that are related to education was one reason for this study. This scholarly analysis of the dynamics between university students and autocratic political and military governments is significant in that regard. Much of Sierra Leone's educational history has been forgotten because the pursuit of such studies was considered to be a luxury.
