The study was conducted to ascertain whether physical education teachers, using a peak flow meter, could reliably screen for exercise-induced asthma (EIA) in children during free running. The study was conducted using a convenience sample of male pupils between the ages of 12 and 18 years. They were tested with a peak flow meter for peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and with a flow-volume curve for forced expiratory flow in 1 second (FEV1) before and 10 minutes after a self-paced free running...

We report a mutation in the connexin 26 gene (Cx26) in a consanguineous Moroccan family linked to the DFNA3/DFNB1 locus on human chromosome 13q11-q12. Affected subjects display congenital, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss. We have previously identified Cx26 mutations in consanguineous Pakistani families. This current finding indicates that Cx26 mutations are not restricted to ethnically and geographically distinct populations. This is an important observation since it will help to...

This study presents 3 years of data from a longitudinal study designed to follow changes in VO 2 max and treadmill (TM) exercise performance in African-American girls throughout middle school. Subjects ( N = 19) were tested 6 months apart during grades 6-8. VO 9 and heart rates (HR) were measured continuously while each subject performed an incremental TM test to volitional exhaustion. Absolute VO 2 max (ml • min 1 ) increased with time, while relative (ml • kg 1 * min 1 ) values declined...

The lower quantity (or political quotas) of education received by Africans than whites is a simple explanation for the wage structure documented in this paper. The...

This article provides a review of the school library development in Ghana against the background of a new educational system that was put in place a decade ago.
