Summary The declining quality of education is becoming a global concern. Teachers, no doubt, have been accused of poor attitude to work. How many teachers have dedication to the profession we do not know. This study examines self‐concept and teacher trainees attitude to the profession and found a convincing number of ‘false positive’ teachers in a teacher training college in Nigeria. Implications for teaching and quality of work done by such teachers were discussed.
