THE ONSET of menarche and subsequent menstruation problems in 420 secondary school girls in the Rivers State, Nigeria, selected on urban/rural equal representation criterion were studied. Results show that the age at which menarche occurs among the girls cluster at the range of 11 to 14 years. Girls in the urban schools attain menarche earlier than those in the rural areas. The reliability of using visible haematuria as an indirect screening technique to detect Schistosoma haematobium was investigated in 418 school children from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The sensitivity of the test varied significantly with the time of urine collection and the portion of the micturition stream examined. Abstract Differences in motor performance according to chronological age and gender of 341 young Nigerian children (ages 3 to 5) were examined. Motor test items designed by Morris et al. Abstract Vegetation growing periods for 1983-84 were determined for 28 sites in Ethiopia using data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA series of meteorological satellites.
