Introduction 'Slavery' does not lend itself to a single and easy definition. There are many definitions for the phenomenon and this is because scholars define it to suit their cultural and social background (Bonsu, 2015). Moreover, the kind of slavery that existed in the Gold Coast (a former British colony until 1957, now the independent nation of Ghana) was different from that of Europe. Indigenous slavery existed in various forms before the arrival of the in the Gold Coast. These following...

The population of the Sahel region of West Africa has approximately doubled in the past 50 years, and could potentially double again by the middle of this century. This has led to the northward expansion of agricultural areas at the expense of natural savanna, leading to widespread land use -land cover change (LULCC). Because there is strong evidence of significant surface-atmosphere coupling in this region, one of the main goals of the West African Monsoon Modeling and Evaluation project...

This is especially true in situations where copy editors are required to work within a mark-up (increasingly XML) paradigm. In developing our curriculum, we have shaped our teaching of editorial practice to consistently reinforce the underlying structure of a publication, as inferred from the technology and practices of a production department. As such, the philosophy...

While scholars have studied various aspects of election campaigns, they have not examined their effects on political knowledge in Africa. Since many problems are blamed on information scarcity, campaign-related learning could affect democratic development positively. This article focuses on the case of Uganda, using unique panel data from the 2010–11 campaign. I find that knowledge on office holders, candidates, and institutions increased significantly over the campaign. Importantly, these...

Postcolonial Francophone sub-African literature and film is inhabited by a legion of physically disabled characters, yet most critics see them as mere signifiers of the failure or tragedy of the postcolonial state. While disability studies has been slowly “cripping” the global and the postcolonial, postcolonial studies has, for the most part, turned a cold shoulder to its crips within. Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène’s 1975 film, Xala, calls for both a clinical unseeing of disability...

An overlapping generations model in which agents decide how much time to invest in human capital versus ethnic capital shows that the demand for human capital is affected positively by parental and group’s older cohort human capital and negatively by group size. Two ex ante identical groups may diverge in human capital accumulation, with the divergence mostly occurring among their low-ability...
