The Huon‐Finisterre island arc terrane is actively colliding with the north edge of the Australian continent. The collision provides a rare opportunity to study continental accretion while it occurs. We examine the geometry and kinematics of the collision by comparing earthquake source parameters to surface fault geometries and plate motions, and we constrain the forces active in the collision by comparing topographic loads to gravity anomalies. Waveform inversion is used to constrain focal...

Introduction Persons with disabilities differ in a number of ways. Among these are differences in level of self esteem, feelings about participation in rehabilitation, and willingness to function in and contribute to society. In addition, considerable evidence has been put forth which suggests that among minority persons with disabilities, the level of utilization of rehabilitation services is often associated with factors such as attitude toward the disability, attitude toward self,...

Many communities in the Rivers State, Nigeria, are complaining about pollution problems due to waste discharges from industries located in their neighbourhood. Such incessant complaints indicate that effluents are not given standard treatment before their discharge into the environment. This study examined the quality of effluents collected from 6 randomly selected industries in the Rivers State and corroborated results obtained with those of questionnaires circulated in the communities...

Recent data suggest that a substantial percentage of test-anxious white children suffer concurrently from social phobia or overanxious disorder. However, there are no data on the relationship among these conditions in African American children. This study compared the relationship of test anxiety, a common childhood complaint, to other DSM-III-R anxiety disorders in samples of African American and white elementary school children. As expected, the results indicated that there were...

Since the Soweto uprising in 1976, black youth in the townships of South Africa have been at the forefront of the struggle against apartheid. Organised political protest has taken a variety of forms including school boycotts, protest marches, work stayaways, and the destruction of school and other state property which invariably has led to violent confrontations with the police and security forces. An additional unintended consequence has been that gang violence linked to criminal activities...

This study examined the empirical validity of a model of human motivation as it applies to school success and failure in 3 independent samples of 10- to 16-year-old African-American youth. Specifically, we assessed how indicators of context, self, and action relate to measures of risk and resilient outcomes in school in 3 different samples, using 3 different measurement strategies. Correlational and path analyses on the 3 data sets supported the empirical validity of the model....

The purpose of this study is to use the concepts of the Health Belief Model (HBM) to predict self-reported condom use among university students in Nigeria. A sample of 395 students enrolled in a required course at a University in Nigeria completed a self-administered questionnaire. The HBM guided instrument design. Regression analyses were used to test the HBM variables (susceptibility to and severity of AIDS; benefits and barriers to condom use; cues to action; AIDS knowledge; and...

One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Africa (surface wave magnitude M(s) = 7.2) occurred about 50 kilometers east of the Upper River Nile on 20 May 1990. Four days later, two more large earthquakes (M(s) = 6.4 and 7.0) occurred about 50 kilometers to the northwest in the Nile Valley. In the following months, a further 60 events were recorded by seismic stations worldwide. The earthquakes are associated with two fault systems: one east of the Nile with azimuth southeast and one...

This article argues that the focus on government expenditure, present in many assessments of the impact of structural adjustment on the social sectors, is misplaced. A case study of Côte d'Ivoire shows that during a period of structural change, the poorest segments of the population suffered a significant deterioration in access to education and educational achievement. Yet, countrywide indicators were stable or declined only slightly, and government expenditure indicators even showed an...

UPb dating of single abraded zircon grains from a Pongola Supergroup rhyodacite sample collected in southern Swaziland yields a crystallization age of 2985±1 Ma. This date is significantly older than our previously reported UPb age determined on highly discordant and unabraded zircons from the same sample. The new zircon age indicates that the formation of the Pongola volcanics occurred not much later than the emplacement of the youngest granitoids thought to be broadly coeval with the...
