The Belief Systems Analysis Scale (BSAS) was administered to 171 African American college students attending Black studies classes at a predominantly White institution to provide further evidence on the psychometric properties of the instrument. The Racial Identity Attitude Scale (RIAS) and the African Self-Consciousness Scale (ASCS) were used to provide construct validity and determine the relationship between an optimalAfrocentric belief system, racial identity attitudes, and African...

The relevance to industries of the mathematics curriculum at Uganda technical colleges is assessed through analysis of the extent of application to industries of the mathematics taught to the diploma students. The mathematical requirements of the civil, electrical and mechanical engineering technicians and the influence of industrial training on the engineering technical students perception of the mathematical needs of industries in Uganda are examined. Results of the study reveal that...

Parents often find it difficult to help their children remain engaged in the academic process, especially as children approach adolescence. African-American parents living in the center city face a greater challenge due to high dropout rates among adolescents. The present study examined the effect of parents' behaviors and attitudes on school engagement, school performance, and self-worth of 100 African-American young adolescents. Prospective analyses showed that parents' school approach...

An overview of continuing education in South Africa reveals that despite strong philosophical support a number of factors impede the developmental of an effective system of such education. Existing inadequacies have been exacerbated by the introduction in 1986 of a comprehensive program for entry into the profession, resulting in an overwhelming demand for continuing education for nurses who trained prior to that. Rural nurses in particular are disadvantaged, with nondegree continuing...

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled iron supplementation trial was conducted in Kenya to examine the effect of iron supplements on appetite and growth in 87 primary school children. Sustained-release ferrous sulfate (150 mg) or placebo tablets were provided daily at school for 14 wk. Prior to tablet administration, baseline anthropometry, iron nutritional status (hemoglobin and serum ferritin), parasitic infections and clinical indicators of morbidity were measured. A baseline...

The oceanic sector of the Cameroon line consists of three volcanic islands: Principe, São Tomé and Pagalu. New 40Ar39Ar data for Pagalu basalts, combined with published KAr ages for Principe and São Tomé, indicate that all three islands have been active in the past 5 Ma. They have similar petrogenetic histories, with basements of basaltic flows capped by more evolved rocks. However, the age of the earliest exposed volcanic rocks decreases oceanward from Principe (31 Ma) to São Tomé (13 Ma)...

This preliminary study examined suicidality in 233 African American college students who attended a historically Black college. Suicidality involves both suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviors. Suicidal ideation includes the thoughts andfeelings that are often associated with suicidal behavior (e.g., developing a suicide plan, preoccupation with thoughts of death, etc.). Suicidal behavior involves the deliberate attempt to take one's life. The results indicate that the suicidality among...

Roadside dust collected from different parts of Lagos metropolis were analysed for heavy metals and other trace elements using a combination of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The results show a positive correlation of the concentration of Pb and some other vehicular emission-related elements with the traffic density. Automotive emission was also found to be...

Part of a large study in Tanzania, a study provides a broad context of obstacles to literacy, particularly those affecting migratory subpopulation groups. Subjects, 480 adults who participated in national literacy programs and belonged to one of two communities of the Maasai, were interviewed. The first group--the Maasai of Longido--represent a section of the pastoral community with a high degree of nomadism. The second group--the Maasai of Monduli--show a lower degree of nomadism with more...

The early Archaean Nondweni greenstone belt is dominated by mafic volcanic rocks which have a wide range in compositions. Primary volcanic structures and compositional characteristics point to this succession being unique in Archaean geology and an important indicator of controls of magma formation and environment of deposition. Compositionally the Nondweni lavas are broadly similar to those of the Barberton Sequence (high values for CaO/Al2O3, Ti/Y and low Al2O3/TiO2). They are also...
