Describes two international development education projects in the context of requirements for project success and in terms of a project design model developed by the authors. The first section assesses conditions for project initiation and sustainability for in‐service education projects in Swaziland and Malawi, Africa. An analysis of each project indicated that factors such as the significance of key individuals as the locus of intervention, objectively measurable outcomes, and logical...

The diagnosis and treatment of bulimia in underdeveloped countries is not well documented. The following is a case study of a young Egyptian woman who met the diagnosis for bulimia according to DSM-/I/-R (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, American Psychiatric Association, 1987) and was treated in her native country of Egypt. The study examines individual and familial issues relevant to the disorder as well as hypotheses about the effects of conflicts engendered by...

If we all suffer and survive among those marginalized, as some readers of this piece may want to say, then my response to that is that AfricanAmericans do so differently. Caucasian women are in need of positive reinforcement as are those of the underclass and the non-traditional older student. So are Asians and Hispanics and Native Americans. I am not arguing this point. But with African-American students, there are many differences that do not, generally, apply to others. A case in point...

This is a study of parental attitudes to schooling for girls (compared to boys) at the Primary and secondary level. The study was limited to three districts in Malawi: Mulanje, Mangochi, and Lilongwe. The study examined the economic and social and cultural factors that influence girls' participation and persistence in school. Parents were interviewed about their opinions and attitudes toward educating girls in contrast to boys. They were asked about the educational choices they had made for...

Volcanic ash soils of the Great Rift Valley of Africa and east Java, Indonesia, are highly fertile due to an ample supply of available phosphorus. The origin of the natural phosphates has been determined from oxygen isotope analyses (δ18O) which reflect the formation temperature of the PO bond. The δ18O values of phosphates extracted from fourteen surface, or near-surface, soil samples ranges from + 10.1 to +24.8‰. The values are higher than those of recent volcanic ashes from Oldoinyo...

Highlights problems of training and personnel development in the context of inadequate training facilities, and inadequately defined skills resulting in failure on the part of the professional to meet the needs of users. Covers the key attributes and attitudes required for the identification of skills in the context of African librarianship in general, and that of Tanzania in particular. Stresses the need for a concrete and appropriate training and personnel development programme.

Impaired coronary reserve and increased minimal coronary resistance have been documented in several animal models of left ventricular hypertrophy. There is controversy whether the increased minimal coronary resistance is due to vascular or extravascular causes. To test the hypothesis that pressure-overloaded left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with a vascular defect, studies were performed using isolated buffer-perfused guinea pig hearts taken 72 ±6 days post-aortic banding (L...

Addresses the purposes of school libraries by pinpointing their emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits for young learners. Discusses their requirements by considering typical organizational deficiencies and situations in Africa, particularly Kenya. Concludes with a summary of some of the existing contributions made towards the achievement of school library development in Africa. Acknowledges that specific steps exist to develop school libraries in Kenya but that these steps have lacked...

Abstract The training of black teachers in South Africa has greatly expanded in recent decades. The expansion resulted from a strong demand for teachers in black schools and from an even stronger and greatly unrealistic demand for places in teacher training colleges. The demand for teachers developed as a result of growing enrolment and an attempt to lower the pupil‐teacher ratios. The demand for places in teacher training colleges in turn developed only partly as a result of the demand for...

The 3-D P-wave and S-wave velocity structure in the upper crust beneath the Lake Bogoria region of the Kenya Rift Valley is obtained by the simultaneous inversion of local earthquake arrival-time data for velocity and hypocentral parameters. The data were obtained from seismograms recorded by the KRISP85 (Kenya Rift International Seismic Project 1985) Lake Bogoria earthquake network and inverted using a modified version of Thurber's 3-D iterative simultaneous inversion program. The results...
