Introduction Both national political contexts and more localized patterns of educational access make studying the role of community colleges in the educational pathways of California's African American and Latino communities vital for those interested in equity within higher education. Community colleges play a disproportionately large role in the educational pathways of Latino and African American students. Nationally, students under-represented in higher education in general are...

The rivalries between the Soviet Union and the United States, Egypt and Israel, and India and Pakistan produced twelve major crises and seven wars during the quarter-century following World War II. A disproportionate share of international crises and wars occur between long-term rivals. Why could not the leaders of these states learn to manage their disputes without severe crises or war? Russell J. Leng finds that the lessons leaders of those states drew from their experiences most often led...

This paper compares and contrasts school counsellor training programmes in two institutions from different cultures: The University of Ilorin, Nigeria and The Pennsylvania State University. While the USA is an industrialised Western nation, Nigeria is a developing African nation. A comparative inquiry of this nature is likely to provide a comprehensive and contemporary view of the national conditions from which guidance and counselling concerns emerge in the two countries. The areas covered...

Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin are known to block the medial olivocochlear efferent system. In order to determine whether this inhibition takes place at the postsynaptic cholinergic receptors in outer hair cells (OHCs), we studied the effects of these polycationic molecules on cholinergic currents evoked in isolated guinea-pig OHCs. The cholinergic response of OHCs involves nicotinic-like receptors (nAChRs) permeable to Ca2+ ions that activate nearby Ca2+-sensitive K+ channels...

Africa's progress remains severely constrained by major diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB. Yet recent years have seen renewed momentum in the fight against these diseases. The Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) (created in 1997) is one of several initiatives (including WHO's Roll Back Malaria project and Medicines for Malaria Venture) that have helped to galvanize international action to tackle malaria, which kills more than a million people each year. Bringing together...

ABSTRACT Recent drought in southern Africa has renewed concern about natural and possible man-made climate change. A large majority of the population relies on agriculture at a subsistence level for food, or at a more advanced level to generate income, and therefore are susceptible to inter-annual and intra-seasonal variability in rainfall and climate. Most drought-related studies in South Africa describe its temporal behaviour and the associated anomalies over the country and surrounding...

Environmental issues are widely discussed in contemporary Egypt. This paper examines how everyday forms of environmentalist action relate to the definition of the problems people give and is based on research carried out between 1995 and 1997 in three localities within greater Cairo and in one village north of the city. The focus is on the
