Many countries in the world, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, work towards developing modern industrialized economies. Much of the discussion in this area revolves around investment in natural resources and physical, human, and financial capitals. Abstract This article analyzes a case of possession by spirit familiars (majini) among female students of a primary school in the Taita/Taveta District of Kenya. I explore the symbolic and historical significance of majini among the people of Taita (Wataita), examining in particular the homology among local conceptions of majini and local conceptions of money. I argue that the idea of majini has long reflected the discontents of the particular modernity that emerged in late colonial and...

Post-colonial sub-Saharan Africa has languished. For many countries in the region, living standards are lower in the 1990s than they had been thirty years earlier. The network of recording raingauges in South Africa with long records is relatively sparse and only 55 out of a total of 412 raingauges currently have record lengths longer than 30 years. In addition, much of the digitised rainfall data from numerous stations are viewed as being unreliable, with important events missing and errors in the digitised data. In an attempt to overcome data limitations and to improve reliability, a regional, index storm approach based on L-moments has been applied...

Climate extreme events affect people whose livelihoods are reliant on the water resources of the Volta Basin in West Africa. Therefore, decision-makers and policymakers need reliable predictions of these extremes on several time scales to develop an Early Warning System (EWS) to combat the devastating impact of extreme climatic events. In that vein, the study evaluated the performance of 41 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) in simulating six (6) extreme...

A reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) associated with the apolipoprotein E (APOE) Ε4 allele is reported in populations of African origin. In order to clarify possible reasons for this, we examined the association between APOE genotype and early cognitive impairment in a community-based African Caribbean UK population aged 55–75 years. APOE genotype was available for 202 participants, 57 (28%) of whom were classified as having relative cognitive impairment on a battery of...
